You're in a pickle.
You feel like it's an issue related to gender, but it isn't sexual harassment... so you're not sure what to call it.
You're not sure how to address it.
It's not something you can really explain to HR - it's not really in their vocabulary.
It's like we need a new language, a new approach.
You need something that can help the culture, the operation of systems, the way you work together - something new.
You need an intervention with someone who does have a new approach - a helpful, positive intervention that relieves unspoken conflict and increases genuine consideration and collaboration on your team.
And you need it now!
A double-Master's, former school creator and leader, I am a natural systems analyst and relational consultant.
I'm really good at the deep-dives. The places others don't want to go.
I've also been the woman sitting in meetings, even at the administrative level, with a deep knowing that we had an unspoken gender issue.
I've been escorted toward the door by HR in a bad way, in a workplace I cared deeply about, when I tried to talk about gender.
In 2017, I prepared to make my exit from the traditional workplace and transitioned to a career that now allows me to help others have the real, nuanced conversations about both gender and masculine / feminine bias that:
1) people are afraid to have, and
2) everyone breathes a sigh of relief after they've had.
We don't have to be afraid of these conversations - because I know how to have them differently.
I personally think that the way we've dealt with gender in the workplace has led to more fear and avoidance of one another.
It's been super uncomfortable and contentious. But it doesn't have to be.
Let's heal that and create connected workplaces again.
Larry had good intentions. Most bosses have good intentions.
He desired to have an inclusive workplace and even sought to implement innovative ideas he'd studied.
He confided in me that he couldn't figure out why women didn't want to work for him. Not only that, he was losing core talent.
Within days of consulting for Larry, I could see why.
His value system only truly valued all things traditionally masculine. Not entirely surprising, given the world's history.
But he also wanted things from women, things that were "feminine" in nature, like emotional laboring and additional support conversations, without giving adequate compensation or an equal seat at the business table.
While the women were figuratively "at the table," he actually only valued masculine energies in business, which polarized women and created a feeling they were being taken advantage of. The women, too, did not feel that they could voice this to Larry.
No one at the company had the language for this, which is where my consulting came into play.
Could Larry see this about himself before we started? Of course not. It stemmed from his own upbringing and business training. He'd never realized that he valued men for some things, women for other things, and subconsciously created a segmented environment.
When he learned about feminine and masculine leadership strategies, he could see that both are a valuable asset to his business, both financially and culturally. We could restructure a few things so that an equitable environment reflected the updated values.
Given a combination of executive coaching and team meetings, we were able to create a new dialogue for those involved, see what was happening, make changes, forgive, and upgrade the culture.

In my TEDx, I took a leap - I used the word "sacred" to describe feminine and masculine. It was a bold choice.
If you watch the talk, you'll get it. I was directing our attention toward the archetypal, the energetic, the "sacred" and authentic versions of what "masculine" and "feminine" are, rather than what we assume are based on gender constructs.
When I consult with businesses, I do not have to use the word "sacred," and it does not have to be spiritual. The fun, exciting, leading edge part of all of this is that to actually get curious about these two archetypes and dive into actualizing them in the workplace will be the advantage of the few. It is you, the few, that I serve.
