ENOUGH
WHAT IS ENOUGH?
October 6, 2022
This month we’re going to tackle a unique topic: enough. How much of various things is “enough”? Whether it’s time, money, status, activities, familytime or worktime, how do we evaluate what is enough? And this will lead us down some familiar paths to perfectionism, other people’s opinions, and the need for prioritization.
The formal definition of enough is: as much or as many as required. I didn’t find this definition particularly helpful because required is a subjective word too – who decides what’s required?
Instead, let’s use this framework:
A) Abundance – More than “enough” and a large quantity of something.
B) Enough – A balanced amount of something that is neither a large quantity nor some degree of need.
C) Need – The state of not having sufficient amount of something.
In the upcoming blogs, we’ll cover enough from a business context, a family context and as it applies to our children.
For now, think about your life arenas: health, love, family & friends, mission, finances, interests, and spirit. Where do you have abundance, enough and need. Do you think in these terms? Do you think gratefully about your areas of abundance and enough? Do you sometimes grey the lines between these? When you stop to think about these categories, do you find you take for granted what you have? Or do you find that there are areas you need to work through because you are on the lower end of the scale?
PONDER THE MEANING OF ENOUGH.
