History

Henri Marie de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator who brought us insight into the colorful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century. He is one of the best-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period, along with Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin. Toulouse-Lautrec had congenital health problems and was very short in stature at 4ft 8in.

Introduction

He was drawn to Montmartre, the area of Paris, famous for its bohemian lifestyle, artists, writers, and philosophers. Lautrec studied with Leon Bonnat and Leon placed Henri in the heart of Montmartre, which he rarely left for over 20 years.

“Everywhere and always ugliness has its beautiful aspects; it is thrilling to discover them where nobody else has noticed them.”

Toulouse Lautrec

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”

Toulouse Lautrec

I love this story about Henri Toulouse-Lautrec because there is so much we can take away from this. You can almost hear his thoughts and feel his pain. With everything that he experienced in his childhood and adult life, he still pushed forward. It’s that fire that burns within us that fuels us to keep moving despite the circumstances. We can kick and scream because many of us don’t want to face it, but you can never put it out until you get it out.

“You can never put the fire out of your soul until you get it out in the world”
