Honoring Jim Swearingen

IN LOVING MEMORY

Founder of Bay Area Hypnotherapy 2006
James D. Swearingen, MDiv, CH

October 19, 1935 - June 3, 2013

"I raise up for Myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in My Heart
and in My mind; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall go
in and out before My Anointed forever."
~1 Samuel 2:35

Jim willingly, intentionally, poured out his life for others. He believed he was called to empty himself for God in His service. To Jim, that was the true calling of a priest. And to that end, he tirelessly devoted his life to the homeless, the poor, the sick, the downtrodden and the needy. He was filled with a great love of life. Those who knew him remembered his energy, his great love of life and his wonderful laugh. He truly loved all people and brought his big heart and all of that love with him to serve clients at Bay Area Hypnotherapy. His wish for every client, every friend, every loved one, is expressed in St. Theresa's prayer below:

"May today there be peace within.

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you ...
May you be content knowing you are a child of God ...
Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of you."
~Saint Theresa

Saint Theresa is known as the Saint of the Little Ways,
meaning she believed in doing the little things in life well and with great love.
She is also the patron Saint of flower growers and florists, represented by roses.

Jim and I were happy "newlyweds" for 35 years ... sharing common interests and passions. He will always be the love of my life and the driving passion and healing energy behind Bay Area Hypnotherapy.

Our practice was unique, each of us sharing our special strengths and talents, truly complimenting one another.  Clients would truly get "two for one" when they signed up with us, as it wasn't uncommon for a client to meet individually one time with Jim and another time with me ... whatever was appropriate to ensure the client received full advantage of each one's unique expertise and specialty services.

Since Jim first founded Bay Area Hypnotherapy in 2006, we have devoted ourselves to developing a healing practice where people can find a peaceful refuge from the outside world. In our office, clients experience the healing of professional, life-changing hypnotherapy in a safe, caring, and supportive environment. It is here they can safely learn to access the power of their subconscious minds and begin to experience permanent, beneficial change ... enabling them to achieve their personal goals and work toward fulfilling their full potential.

Jim was passionate and unwavering in his commitment to others, even seeing clients days before his death. He really loved people!

He devoted himself to developing a healing practice
where people could find a peaceful refuge from the outside world.

He gave each person his heart and taught them to access the power of their subconscious minds in a safe, caring, supportive environment.

Jim received the Master of Divinity from General Theological Seminary, NYC, in 1962 and was ordained an Episcopal Priest. He contributed decades of experience as a pastoral counselor, teacher and spiritual advisor to his hypnotherapy practice.

He was certified as a Consulting Hypnotherapist in 2006 Jim and immediately founded Bay Area Hypnotherapy in San Francisco. In hindsight, it was against all odds and despite chronic and severe disabilities that he successfully developed this practice. Rather than holding him back, the physical limitations he faced daily only served to make him a more compassionate counselor and hypnotist. He understood the power of hypnosis to motivate, energize and move people to reach the goals they may have thought impossible. The mere existence of Bay Area Hypnotherapy today is a testimony to the marvelous power of hypnosis! Jim’s greatest joy was to pass this gift on to others.

Jim’s professional experience included “time served” as a Stock Broker, Insurance Agent, Notary Public, Real Estate agent, and college-level Communications Instructor. In 1989 he developed and hosted his own radio talk show in Fort Bragg, CA.

While living in Fort Bragg, Jim served on the board of a local alcohol recovery center as counselor and advisor. Jim was a recovering alcoholic with 32 years of sobriety and helped countless people to deal with their addictions to go on to live sober, clean, productive lives.

A personal letter to you, from Jim, President and Founder of Bay Area Hypnotherapy ...

"God save me from the well-intentioned" is a very old adage. But having good motives and an opinion doesn't constitute the ability to help. I've spent more than four decades not only wanting to help, but studying and working to learn to truly solve human problems. As hypnotism is commonly misunderstood, it was almost a fluke, an after-thought, that I stumbled onto what hypnotism can do. It has helped me in the most interesting and amazing ways: deepening my meditation, easing my pain, reducing my stress, increasing my concentration and strengthening my memory.

--Yes, of course! I too have good intentions, but these are anchored by years of carefully acquired knowledge and practical experience. Only one other factor could be added — compassion. That comes only by living through the same trials as you.

Do you smoke? I was a smoker.

Do you over-indulge in alcohol? I have been sober for over 28 years ... and Lynn stood by me through every bit of the pain and the process of recovery.

Are you addicted to prescription meds? So was I.

Is your marriage falling apart? My first one did and Lynn was divorced too — today we've been happily married for 27 years.

Are you over-stressed? I was a Stock Broker at one time ... and Lynn has always worked for dynamic, high-powered executives ... you figure it out!

Can't sleep? Insomnia is no longer a problem for me.

Are you sad and lacking motivation? There was a time when I couldn't get out of bed in the morning, but those days are long passed.

Are you angry? So am I, at times, but I've learned to control it.

We are not doctors. We don't treat, diagnosis, or guarantee cures. We ARE Nationally Certified Consulting Hypnotherapists, specifically trained to help you harness the power of hypnosis to enhance learning, heal emotional scars, improve performance, change habits and speed the healing process.

Since I am also a retired Episcopal Priest, I bring over forty years of experience as a counselor and spiritual advisor to my Hypnotherapy practice. I have worked in, studied, and experienced nearly all of the problems of the human condition. I can assure you that NO PERMANENT CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR TAKES PLACE WITHOUT TOUCHING THE SUBCONSCIOUS. And there is no more direct path to the subconscious than through the use of Hypnotism.

"NO PERMANENT CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR TAKES PLACE
WITHOUT TOUCHING THE SUBCONSCIOUS.

And there is no more direct path to the subconscious
than through the use of Hypnotism."
