Freelancer #Tip 2 – Business, developing a business plan

April 2, 2020 - FREELANCE, TIPS

The problem

Here’s the thing.

We tend to focus on doing what we do best - being creative.

However, if we don’t focus on the business side, we may hinder the opportunity to be creative.

Because a business that just goes with the flow, won’t survive.

The mindset

A business with a plan will thrive. It has projections, goals and focus.

A plan encourages direction, certainty and clarity.

When you know your end goal, you can make difficult decisions, easy.

You know your intention.

You know your outcome.

And you'll know HOW to get there.

This is a winning strategy.

So what are we waiting for, let’s dive in!

I will guide you on how to write a business plan. A few powerful questions can make a world of difference for defining your purpose.

So you have a business, what’s the plan, Sam?

Every successful business has a business plan. Here are some hot tips to get those cogs turning:

Key points

  • Audience - Do you know your audience? What are your audience's greatest needs?
  • Needs - Are you offering a service in that is demand? In what way do you serve this need that makes you stand out from the crowd?
  • Logic - Write down the reasons your business will succeed. This can be used for your ‘WHY’, which we will discuss later on.
  • Goals - Creating short term and long term goals help keep momentum and focus on the current plan while working towards your future vision.
  • Finances - How much do you need to bring in a year for you and your business to be thriving?
  • Competition - Research your competition, does your company do something better, faster, cheaper, higher-value than your competitors?

Once you've laid out the above, you will now be in a position to write out your mission statement.

Mission statement

Write down concisely:

• WHY your brand exists?

• State WHAT you do?

This statement can be as little as two words and up to two sentences but no longer than that.

  • Having a clear mission statement will give you clarity about: WHO you are, WHY you care about what you do and HOW you serve others needs. This, my friend, is your PURPOSE

Example: "NK Films – an award-winning post-production company based in London and Barcelona, passionate about creating visual content that is meaningful, compelling and timeless. We're trusted by the biggest brands in the world including Adidas, Huawei, Dove and Pepe Jeans."

You can then expand on this and even say:

"Our services include editing, visual FX, motion graphics, compositing, grading and video retouch."

From this you can take the goal and ask yourself; what do I need to work on for this goal to become a reality?

We'll go into more detail in the near future on the above. For now, take these high-level concepts and own them!

Action

Using each key point above, write down your answers, give them to a peer or friend and ask them, do they understand your business plan?

Onwards and upwards,

NK
