APRIL 2022
BALI IS BACK!
BUT WILL TOURISM KILL THE REEFS?
Hey, Wavemakers!
Oops, April seems to have come and flown by super quickly!
Most likely it's because the borders are open, and it's been starting to get a bit busier around Bali.
This is, of course, great for the economy, but I've had conversations with others who've been here a long time and they, as well as me, are also concerned about the lack of sustainable travel options.
Now that the crowds are back and consumption of everything is increasing, will we again start to see the trash pile up and the corals start to get kicked around and die?
The lack of tourism has definitely made a difference on the reef, and we are seeing a lot of coral growth that did not exist 2 years ago.
This is great for nature as it tries to rebound from human impact, but now, human impact is going to start again.
Let's hope we can all do better this time around!
And in your case, you've already made a great contribution to the reef with your reef growing nice and healthy!
Have a look at the pictures and see how they've grown!
Hope to see you soon in Bali so I can show you your reef in person, in a sustainable way, of course!
In other news, the algae have finally died off. It's taken 3 months for them to disappear. I'm not sure if it's because of the current or the fish have been really ravenous, but whichever it is, the reef is starting to look good again!
We've also blown past 1000 reef stars planted now, so the reef is really starting to look significant, looking forward to accelerating our progress with our new partner Handprint.
Have a look at this video that they produced on our behalf!
As of today, this is where we stand:
1,045
REEF STARS PLANTED
679.8
M² OF CORALS REGROWN
18,810
CORAL FRAGMENTS PLANTED
Till next month for another update on the growth of your corals!
