I hear this a lot in my practice ....."I'm a sugar fiend" "I can't stop eating chocolate" "Sweet buns & cakes are my downfall" & "I'm always snacking after dinner".
For the most part, these dilemmas can be easily fixed by making some minor tweaks in the types of food people eat at meal times.
When my clients first come to me, they are constantly worried about what they should be eating or they are thinking about the next meal - food is a never ending dialogue in their minds - both good and not so good.
Working out what to eat can be very easy and simple when you know how!
There are just 3 types of foods that your body LOVES, and that will help you to lose the cravings and constant thoughts about food.
They are called Macronutrients, and they are simply 3 Big Nutrients that our body needs to survive - Proteins, Carbohydrates and Healthy Fats.
Here's why they make a difference:
Proteins - both animal and plant-based are the building blocks of the body that our cells and muscles need to grow. Proteins make us feel fuller for longer, they build up our muscles which then burn more calories & they help our body to lose fat, reduce cardiovascular risks and help to boost our immune systems.
Carbohydrates - we need carbs as an energy source for the body. It is the processed sugary refined carbs which cause cravings when we eat too much of them- and then we just want to eat more. Think white bread, cakes, pizza, pasta, pastries etc. Our body needs to have fibre rich natural carbohydrates like whole grains fresh fruit and vegetables, which will give the body energy that is released in the right amounts to keep our energy levels balanced.
Healthy Fats - Did you know that our brain is made up of approx 60% Fat? This is a very good reason to have healthy fats, because our body does not make the healthy fats that we need - so we must get it from the foods we eat. Healthy fats help to regulate our hunger and eliminate cravings for sugary processed foods. You can get healthy fats from a mix of whole, unprocessed, high-quality foods like nuts & seeds (hemp, flax, and chia), fish, seaweed, pasture-raised/grass-fed animals/eggs, olives, & avocado's. It's best to avoid industrially processed, artificially created, and factory farmed foods, which contain unhealthy fats, along with many oils or fats that become solid at room temperature - saturated fats. Trans fats or partially hydrogenated fats are also best avoided.
By having the right amount of these three types of foods, we are giving our body what it needs and also helping to regulate our hunger so we are not craving processed or sugary foods.
