MARCH 2022
THE WORST IS OVER, OR YET TO COME?
Hey, Wavemakers!
Good news! The scourge of algae has (somewhat) retreated for now!
We were recently planting a new batch of reef stars, and I noticed that the algae problem was better in some areas (the brown ones were less obvious than before), and some areas were still pretty bad (the purple ones).
I did wonder if our frequent "blowing" away of the algae was actually doing any good, so I asked a marine biologist who has some experience with algae about it.
His response was that if they are anchored to something, then they will continue to grow, but once they are removed and floating around in the seawater, it's hard for them to anchor again and grow more.
So I guess what we are doing does work. Yay! I was a bit concerned that by removing them from one area they would just float away and settle on another patch and continue to grow like crazy. It's nice to know that what we do does help the reef even in a small way.
If you do see some of these algae when you're next diving, help do the reef a favour and blow it off as well! Just wave your hand close to the algae and push some water over to see if you can lift it off. Just be careful not to hit any coral when you do so!
Sadly, we can't be there all the time to monitor and clean up this invasion of algae. If we had the opportunity to plant corals all the time (hint hint, wink wink), then I'm sure we would be able to clear up more of the algae and keep the little reef we have built together pristine and healthy...
However, that being said, we don't know when the next invasion will be, the algae will always be there, waiting for their chance to multiply and take over the seabed.
In any case, please have a look at your corals for this month! Growing nice and healthy (we like to think!).
Please feel free to share these photos and spread the word about the good work you've been doing for the ocean!
If you think this is something that is worth sharing, please tell your friends! If you think it's not worth it, then tell your enemies! Haha!
As of today, this is where we stand:
920
REEF STARS PLANTED
604.8
M² OF CORALS REGROWN
16,560
CORAL FRAGMENTS PLANTED
Till next month for another update on the growth of your corals!
