FEAR
August 11, 2022
How about that quote? It grips me every time! I don’t think I had a lot of fear a year ago. Other than the pandemic, things were pretty comfy in my life – my career, my family, my goals and my lifestyle.
This year has been a ride on the fear factor train! I sometimes joke that I didn’t know what I was in for as a small business owner, but I’m glad I didn’t know or I might have let fear stop me. I have learned to forge through it. And I’ve also learned that the more I fear something, the more it means it’s something I should challenge myself to do.
Here are a couple of examples:
Marketing – I will admit that I slept through most of my marketing classes in grad school. Shameful, I know, but thank goodness for my friend Julia who gave me her notes. I’m kicking myself now because marketing a small business is no joke. This, by far, has been my greatest learning area this year. I wanted to hand it off, but I’ve learned you just can’t do that with a personal brand and something you’re passionate about. You have to lean in and learn.
Speaking – I’m not someone who loves the stage, but I’m also not afraid of it. This year I’ve learned to conquer my fear in this area by choosing topics I’m passionate about. And I’ve learned that panels are a ton of fun and canned presentations are less my speed. I wouldn’t have learned that if I hadn’t challenged my fears.
Failing – This, of course, is the BIG ONE - fear of failure. I feel like I’ve walked into the fire on this over the last 12 months. I’ve had to try so many new things in this business – telling our story, sharing my passions, putting our services into the marketplace, boatloads of new technology solutions, operating with and without a team, learning to sell without being “salesy” and making start-up spending decisions. Some of these have been super successful and others not at all what I anticipated. I’ve really learned to embrace the adage, “You’re either winning or learning, there is no failure.”
These are common reasons people don’t try something new and challenge their fears:
* Fear of loss – The idea here is that doing something new might cause you to lose something you have today. That could be esteem, confidence, relationships, control, reputation or many other things.
* Fear of hardship – What if trying something new made your situation more difficult, uncomfortable or less fun?
* Fear of outcome – This is really the fear of trying. There's always a chance that things aren't greener or the thing doesn't go well. There's also the change of disappointment.
Is your ship safe in the harbor? Is it doing what it was meant to do?
CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU FEAR AND GO FOR IT.
