Every couple has challenges, struggles, and trials that they go through every day.  As we studied these behaviors, and the behaviors of our own marriages, we came to realize some constant battles that were taking place in almost every marriage. 

Every person we interviewed stated they wish their spouse wasn't so selfish or they wish they would connect in ways that really mattered to them.

You see, we all have love languages that matter most to us.  For some, it's sexual fulfillment, while others it's admiration or affection.  But the question is, why aren't you and your spouse paying attention and fulfilling those languages that matter most?

We are creatures of habit.  What I like means you must like it too.  So, if I choose affection as my most important love language, chances are you are treating your spouse as if that's theirs as well.  That's one of the biggest mistakes we make in our marriages.

Then you have the challenge of 'settling' on things to make both of you happy.  That's good in theory, but who's really giving up the most?

Let me give you an example.  Suppose Frank's number one love language is sexual fulfillment.  For him, fulfilling this need would mean having sex once a day.  Betty, his wife, on the other hand, has ranked sexual fulfillment as her number 11.  She prefers to have sex twice a month.  So let me ask you, what should the compromise be for this couple?

Let's walk through it.  Frank wants sex once a day, which accounts for approximately 30 times per month.  Betty prefers to have sex only twice per 30 days.  What is a good compromise for Betty and Frank so it doesn't continue to cause problems in their marriage?

Do you think Betty should give in and have sex 30 times a month?  No.  Do you think they should have sex only 2 times per month?  No. What Betty needs to understand is that sexual fulfillment is Franks' number one love language, and to her, it's number eleven.

Betty should be thinking about how she can come closer to fulfilling HIS number one love language.  Instead of compromising to her liking, maybe she needs to compromise to his liking...hmmm are we on to something?
