What's behind that smile?
When I was growing up, the smile you see in this picture was a survival tool. Have you ever heard the song Smile by Nat King Cole? Smile, though your heart is aching. Smile, even though it's breaking. Although a tear, may be ever so near. That's the time, you just keep on trying.... If you smile through your fear and sorrow...Smile, what's the use of crying...You'll find that life is still worthwhile if you just smile.
What a bunch of Baloney!
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GRIN AND BEAR IT.
A smile is a great way to hide pain. I did it well. Don't you just love that smile in this picture? I used to get so much affirmation from people telling me what a beautiful smile I have. If only they knew, right?
No one truly knows what it feels like to have your inherent dignity destroyed by the violation of your body by a knowing adult unless they've been there.
Nobody really knows what it's like to watch an adult perpetrate violence in front of you and you fear you're next when you're a kid, unless they've been there.
Nobody really knows what it feels like to have someone use you and then move on to the next person, unless they've been there.
Nobody really knows what it's like to have your humanity denied by a political system that values people with a lighter skin tone than you, unless you've been there.
Nobody really knows what it feels like to be emotionally betrayed, unless they've been there.
I've been there, and I know.
If you need someone to hold space for you, to sit with you, to process your emotions with you, to walk through the pain to a new you. I am here.
I support and guide individuals who want to rebuild their lives after trauma to create and enjoy their best life possible.
