Freelancer tip #7 Action – Without it, there are only thoughts.

MAY 4, 2020 - FREELANCE, TIPS

Imagination and thoughts are where it all starts, although what makes those sparks really powerful, is applying the action.

Most of us with 'creatives minds' tend to have the magpie syndrome of seeing something shiny and new and pursuing that, rather than completing our current goals.

This creates overwhelm.

A lack of productivity that builds up causes overwhelm.

If we're not moving forward, we're stuck.

So, to become unstuck, we need a mindset shift and strategy to overcome these hurdles.

Mindset

Procrastination is your enemy, productivity is your friend.

Do you find yourself having the knowledge and ideas but lacking execution?

Why is that?

In some cases it’s ‘analysis paralysis’ and in others, it is a lack of a plan, which translates into a lack of focus.

How

Your goals are achievable when they’re broken down.

If you have a plan set out in bitesize actionable steps you WILL have the ‘will’ to complete them.

Look back on each goal you have and break them into 1-2 sets of actions per goal.

Tips

Environment – If you work from home, create a distraction-free environment: for a set time put your phone on silent, don’t check your messenger apps and resist the temptations of social media (unless you’re a social media marketer!)

Hour of power – Set time blocks in the day for when you will not change task until it's fulfilled.

Incentives – If incentives work for you, reward yourself once you’ve made great progress. Set yourself a target of what you consider a good bar of achievement and treat yourself accordingly.

Momentum – The book the ‘One Thing’ by Gary Keller is a great example of how focusing on ONE thing can greatly increase your productivity, by simply having a laser-like focus on one task at a time.

Multitasking and doing more is often a myth for efficiency.

The simple formula is:

= doing less tasks increases quality and output.

= doing more tasks decreases quality and output.

Less is more.

Lastly, take breaks!

As we discussed previously about self-kindness, take breaks, reward yourself, reset, grab that fresh perspective to switch off and recharge your creative batteries.

My recommendations

Here's some great apps that may help your productivity:

  • Trello - Organise and prioritise your projects effectively.
  • Todoist - A flexible task management app.
  • The Pareto Principle - A fantastic results model, explained by renowned coach Brian Tracey.

Action

Like we spoke about in 'Tip #6 Time-management', now that your tasks are prioritised, breakdown your Trello cards, into 'checklists' (a feature in Trello cards). Which are bite-sized tasks so you can take action on them today.
