WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS...
In order to understand safety and usage, it's important to distinguish what essential oils are compared to other oils like carrier oils and herbal oils.
Essential oils are the highly concentrated oil-soluble constituents (components) of plant matter. Large amounts (sometimes literal tons) of plant matter combined with high temperatures and high pressure causes them to become hundreds of times more potent than the plant itself. It’s been said one drop of Peppermint essential oil is as concentrated as dozens of cups of herbal tea and hundreds of pounds of peppermint leaves.
Carrier oils are "fatty" oils with thick viscosity and are the perfect choice for diluting essential oils for topical applications.
Herbal oils are made from infusing (placing) herbal plant parts into a carrier oil (like olive oil) and can contain a low dilution of essential oils (less than one percent). These can also be used to dilute essential oils, and are more therapeutic than carrier oils due to the addition of the herbs infused in them.
Food flavorings or food extracts are made by infusing (placing) plant matter in a base of alcohol. Created with the intent to be used in products to be consumed, they often contain sweeteners and artificial flavors.
Fragrance oils are chemical-based oils that provide an aroma without any therapeutic benefit. They are often the source of allergies and sensitivities and can be found in dryer sheets, candles, and personal care products.
