Protein and Your Bone Health

When we think of protein, an image of muscles and bodybuilders pops into our heads, but what if I were to tell you protein is essential for so much more?
Did you know protein makes up 50% of your bone volume and 1/3 of its mass? Protein helps the absorption of calcium into your body and reduces the natural breakdown of our bones as we age, especially women.
Meat seems more controversial these days, but it has been integral to our diet for millennia.
Of course, animal products are the best sources, but if you are concerned about sustainability, try unpopular cuts and slow cook them, buy shot meat (venison is often culled for the health of the heard, expertly shot by a gamekeeper) and balanced carcass meat boxes that look to reduce food waste. By only eating popular cuts, we increase food waste and the amount of cattle we grow and slaughter.
What about other dietary sources of protein we can incorporate into a bone-healthy diet?
Vegan sources are not, by themselves, complete and not easily absorbed by the body, but we shouldn't ignore them. Hemp seeds, nuts, seeds, and chia are great examples of vegan protein to top up your intake.
Let's not forget fish, especially oily fish and their omega-3 content. The local fishmonger is always a great place to get your fish or a site that again concentrates on sustainability.
Buying the best you can afford is always great advice, but today's financial climate means budgeting for the family is always key. It is still best to include a good amount of protein wherever you have to get it.
