YEAR 1
If they were in school
If your child is in Year 1 (typically aged 5-6), they’re now settling into the rhythm of "big school" and building on everything they learned in Reception. Year 1 is a bit more structured, but it’s still designed to develop hand-eye co-ordination, brain development and physical development, so it needs to be practical, engaging, hands-on and fun. Think of it as a gentle step up, where your child starts to develop greater independence and confidence in their learning while still enjoying plenty of play and exploration.
Keep screen-time to a minimum, because it leads to addictive personalities and impairs overall development.
What to Expect in Year 1
During the day, your child will have short, focused lessons—usually around 20-30 minutes each—where they’ll work on English (like reading, writing and phonics) and Maths (like addition, subtraction and basic problem-solving). These lessons are interactive and designed to be fun, helping your child build the skills they’ll need for Year 2 SATs and beyond.
Physical Development
Physical skills remain an important part of Year 1. Your child will continue to develop their fine motor skills (like writing, cutting and threading) and gross motor skills (like running, jumping and balancing).
Social and Emotional Growth
Year 1 is also a time for your child to grow socially and emotionally.
While Year 1 is more structured than Reception, there’s still plenty of time for play-based learning and hands-on activities. Your child will have opportunities to explore, create and discover.
Our KS1 Year 1 Curriculum for home
You can recreate this structured learning environment easily at home with our Year 1 program.
The ready-made timetables remove the guesswork of what your child should be learning and doing each day to support their academic, social, emotional and physical development. With one-to-one guidance from you, it will allow your child to stay ahead of the curve with ease throughout the year.
Everyday home activities can be turned into learning experiences using this program. This makes homeschooling a viable option where your child gets the benefits of school-life at home, without the risk of falling behind, provided it is followed.
