Can narcissism run in families
12 February 2023
There's some evidence to suggest that narcissism can run in families. Studies have found that there may be a genetic component to the development of narcissistic personality traits and disorders, with some research indicating that individuals who have a first-degree relative with narcissistic traits may be more likely to develop similar traits themselves.
...environmental and social factors may also play a role in the development of narcissism.
In addition to genetic factors, environmental and social factors may also play a role in the development of narcissism. Children who are raised by narcissistic parents, for example, may be more likely to develop narcissistic traits themselves, due to the modeling of behaviors and the reinforcement of certain attitudes and values.
It is important to note, however, that having a family member with narcissistic traits does not necessarily mean that an individual will develop narcissistic traits or a narcissistic personality disorder themselves. The development of NPD is complex and multifaceted and can be influenced by a range of factors, including genetics, environment, and psychology.
