If you know me, you know I like a nice cocktail or glass of wine. Instead of overindulging in it like I did in college (hello, I went to Penn State and they give you a solid education in drinking), I have since learned how to make spirits a healthy relaxing ritual at the end of the day or as a way to complement and appreciate a great meal. There is a big difference there just as in the way we sometimes tend to abuse food instead of enjoying and appreciating it in nourishing appropriate amounts.

 

Clients and friends often ask me about alcohol choices and what is best in terms of staying the course with their health goals. In short, quantity is key. Pick the beverage that you can consume in the least amount but gives you that same happy effect. If you tend to overdo it with a bottle of wine, stick with a cocktail with a mixer like club soda to minimize added sugar and calories or even a bottle of beer because it’s portion controlled!
