Balancing Heart Health: A Functional Nutrition Approach to Celebrate the Lunar New Year
Jan 26 / by Cavan Chan
February is Heart Health Awareness Month, and cardiovascular health is a major concern in Hong Kong, with 1 in 10 people suffering from heart disease, according to the SCMP. In fact, the World Stroke Organization highlighted the number of stroke patients is getting younger, with 60+ % of stroke patients being under the retirement age. Perhaps it's time to take a proactive, preventive approach to this problem. (Already got question about your health? Click here to consult with a Functional Nutrition Counselor)
As we enter the Year of the Dragon, let's speak about how to navigate the joyful feasts of Lunar New Year while keeping our heart health in mind. Enter Functional Nutrition, a holistic approach to health that promotes making heart-healthy choices.
1. Prioritizing healthy fats and avoiding trans fats & processed food traps. Let's include some nutritious nuts and seeds in your New Year's Tray. Stay away from sugary foods. My favorites are pistachios and macadamia nuts. Both include significant levels of antioxidants and healthy fats. They aid to reduce inflammation, improve weight reduction, and decrease cholesterol.
2. Vegetarian delights: Include a few of vegetable and fungus dishes for your Lunar New Year meal. A good number of phytochemicals, which are beneficial for reducing cardiovascular illnesses.
3. Alcohol Kryptonite: Curcumin (an active ingredient in turmeric) can protect your liver after an overly festive celebration. To prep for that big festive night, prime yourself with a significant quantity of curcumin prior.
Tips: Your bodies can't absorb curcumin easily. Mix it with yogurt or rich milk; fat is a good carrier for curcumin into our system. Your liver will love you for this. Did I mention that curcumin contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it beneficial to your heart health?
Let’s all welcome the year of dragon with joy and good health.
