3 minutes to change the way you think about your strengths forever
Many of the people I work with truly don’t even know their own brilliance.
They don’t think they have anything worth giving, no “extraordinary” skills – let alone anything they could possibly build a business around.
Instead, they are hyper-focused on their weaknesses, all the things that aren’t yet perfect and still “need” to be developed.
Feel a little bit like you, too?
Give me 3 minutes, and I'll prove to you that you’ve been thinking about your strengths all wrong.
But I’ll need you to humor me and join me for a little experiment.
Kay?
Join me for a 30second experiment
Grab a pen and a piece of paper.
Ready?
No, but really, did you grab a pen and paper?
Okay, if you say so.
First, write your name 3 times with your dominant hand.
You done?
See, that didn't take very long, did it?
Now, write your name three more times, but this time with your non-dominant hand.
How was that?
Felt a lot harder, right? Like – you probably got it done, but it may have felt a little clumsy or frustrating.
Okay friend, let’s cut to the chase because I promised you 3 minutes.
3 Takeaways
1 – In case you hadn't caught on to it, your dominant hand represents your strengths. You absolutely can get the job done from a place of weakness, but it’ll require more effort, time and willpower.
Using your strengths feels natural.
It requires relatively little effort.
It can lead to excellent results without much struggle.
Your strengths aren't indicated by the end result, but by how you arrived there.
2 – Just as you likely don’t spend much time thinking about your dominant hand, you often don’t recognize your strengths because they feel so natural. You can activate them without thinking. That doesn’t mean they’re not there.
Let me take that a step further: just because something comes easy to you, that doesn’t mean that it comes easy to others.
3 – I imagine you’ve never argued that it’s better to be right-handed vs. left-handed. There is no better or worse.
Our strengths are diverse, and for good reason. Some people are naturally highly creative, some people highly analytical.
If we all had the exact same strengths, what would we have to give to each other?
Now… if you do have a few more minutes, I want to invite you to sit with these reflections:
There's a lot more I'd want to say about strengths, but for now just remember: the reason you might not be seeing them is that they are just as natural to you as writing with your dominant hand.
But they are definitely there.
Rooting for you,
Charlotte
