Exercise isn't punishment. Food isn't reward.

“It’s OK, I’ll burn this off later”
“I can have this, I went for a long bike ride this morning”
“I’d better go for a walk to burn this off”
I get it.
The calorie-deficit mantra tells us that all we have to do to lose (or maintain) our weight is to eat less and move more.
And so it stands to reason that we think we need to move more if we eat more.
But that sort of feels a bit like punishment, doesn’t it?
Like eating more was BAD, and we need to do some hard labour to make amends.
But that can lead to associating the emotion guilt with eating. Even foods that you enjoy.
How can you truly enjoy it if you’re feeling guilty?
And if you’re going to punish yourself later?
I like to separate exercise from food.
I exercise if:
-it’s something I enjoy (like walking in mountains, or riding a horse, or swimming,
-I want to feel strong,
-I want to give myself an emotional boost (endorphins are good!)
NOT BECAUSE I OVER-ATE
I eat “good” food if:
-I want to boost my immunity
-I don’t want to feel sick, bloated or lethargic
-I want glowing skin, hair & nails
-I have long term plans that will be more fun if I keep in good health.
NOT TO AVOID HAVING TO EXERCISE
How are exercise and food connected in your psyche?
Do you find yourself using one to justify the other?
