Camp Day 3

Wednesday July 25, 2018

Day three of camp started just like any other day, with potty break and morning chores. Then, the campers jumped straight into a repetition of the crate training exercise from yesterday. We do this because we want to start working the dogs with something they already know. From there, we introduced the word, “Free.”

This word is used as a signal to the dog that it is okay to exit the crate. After practicing this motion without the dogs multiple times, Campers finally got to experience the exercise with the dogs. It can be challenging for the dog and the handler, because the dogs are walking out of the crate off-leash. This was worked on for 45 minutes.

Before lunch began the Campers had the chance to make “Adopt Me” bandanas for their dogs. This craft project is important, so we can show off the dogs when we go into the public.

We then had a conversation about taking the dogs home, and how important it is for each Camper to be responsible for their dog. Lastly, we talked about our fundraiser. One suggestion was to follow in Ole Kassow’s footsteps. Kassow had a video posted about his program for biking seniors, who live in nursing facilities around his community. We ask that you watch his TEDx video to better understand the discussion of how we as Camp Doglando could do this.

Every year of Camp we go to Encore, a nursing home, and talk with the residents. We wanted to see if it was possible to accomplish getting our own bike for the residents and Campers. After many discussions and deliberations, it was still left undecided until tomorrow.

Teena had her widely popular "Teena Talk" at lunch. Then it was off to more practice of the "Freeing" exercise. Some Campers were able to get 3 steps away before freeing their dog!

Every camper works at their own pace and understands the significance of that. Following this, was a quick potty break and the choice of swimming or bathing. Of course, Campers chose swimming! Jim, our photographer, came out to take photos of the dogs while they were swimming. He also stayed to take pictures of our afternoon chores. Finishing the day was nap time. This allows everyone to take time with their puppy to bond.

Don't miss tomorrow's adventures!
