Where does motivation come from?

How to Boost your Immunity and stay Healthy over Winter

How long have you been on the weight loss or the dieting merry go round – months, years or even decades??

For many, trying to lose weight is one of the most debilitating things they do to their mind and their body.  Starving & depriving themselves of food and enjoyment, trying out fad diets and exercise routines is very damaging to mind and body, and always leads to putting the weight back on or worse even more than before.

Why does this happen?  Why are people all over the world still trying to crack the weight loss code?  Why is it so hard to keep it off and why is it not sustainable?

A lot of this has to do with motivation and the tools we are using to lose weight – and one of the biggest is a negative mindset – which leads to lack of motivation.

Naturally, if we have failed once, twice or three times at doing the same thing – then we are unlikely to be motivated to try again.  If we don’t change something – then nothing changes, and the outcomes will be the same.

So what is motivation anyway?  According to the dictionary, it means  “a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way.”

The stand out part of this sentence is “a reason”, and this can be a reason for or a reason against – so if there has been a previous failure, then the odds will stack up as motivation NOT to do it.  Hence if you have not lost weight in past – or lost weight, but then put it all back on again – your likely to be motivated NOT to continue OR to continue trying without a positive result which can be very detrimental to your mind-state – and so you can see it becomes an unhappy merry go round.

This is where we need to focus on positive motivation to achieve our goal.  When we are feeling positive we will change our mindset, and continually work towards finding a solution to the problem of not being able to lose weight.

The key to staying motivated is not to rely on external stimulus – but to cultivate an internal stimulus.

External motivation is not personal to us – it is not a drive within – it’s something that is detached from us – something we see or hear and only take action when we do these things.

Internal motivation comes from deep within – it is a drive within us – much like the drive to eat and drink.  When we are internally motivated by the drive to find food – we will do anything to get what we need to eat.  This is a deep primal drive and it ensures our survival.

So find your WHY.  Generally, it’s not just about losing the weight – there is always something more behind it.  Things like, acceptance, confidence, feeling attractive, being successful, being loved by another, self-worth and the list goes on.

When we look at our why – we also then need to dive even deeper and find out what has brought these feelings about – what are our emotions trying to teach us?  What else needs to be addressed in our life?

Find our your WHY and you will find and keep your motivation.
