9 Top Skills To Thrive In Today's Competitive Job Market - Week 3

In week 1 and week 2, I highlighted the top skills you need to acquire in order to stay ahead in today’s competitive job market. Here are the final 7-9 skills. The skills below are also life skills which are so critical especially in the current environment, where things are so unpredictable and change from day to day.

TOP SKILL 7 - SELF BELIEF

Generally people from the UK tend not focus on their strengths and instead feel pressured to conform to the social norm of being modest, even self-effacing. However in today’s competitive job market, we all have to sell ourselves well and not be shy about highlighting our achievements. As such, it is important that we know what our strengths and top skills are. It can be helpful to keep a record of what you do well, the accolades you have received and the good results that you have been responsible for. Record your successes and achievements in a ‘success journal’. Having an objective list of your strengths and accomplishments can boost your self-belief and enable you to confidently communicate your abilities to others.

TOP SKILL 8 - EMBRACE CHANGE

To be successful we need to be adaptable and be able accept change. This may involve changing your mindset and in some situations thinking carefully before you speak out. Rather than ruefully looking at what has changed, we should consider what can be learnt from this new situation and consider what opportunities this change may bring. Instead of resisting or fearing the change, which may be out of our hands, we should try to accept and embrace it. Remember, although it is sensible to have a long-term plan, we should have built in contingencies to deal with some foreseeable changes of circumstance. After all, we’ll never always know what’s just around the corner.

TOP SKILL 9 - RESILIENCE

Everybody has knockbacks in life but it is how you deal with them that matters. For example, J.K. Rowling when writing the first Harry Potter book was unemployed, on social security and raising a daughter by herself and had been rejected by twelve publishing houses before a small London house showed any interest. The Harry Potter books have now gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold more than 400 million copies. They have become the best-selling book series in history and are the basis for a series of films which became the highest-grossing film series in history. She would have never had this happen if she had given up easily. She kept going and did not let the knock backs put her off achieving her dreams.

When we receive a knock back, it can be through our own making or through something that happens outside our control. If the knock back is our own fault, rather than dwell on our blunders or look for a scapegoat, we need to get back on the horse and learn from all that went wrong. When handled well, knock backs can make us more resilient and increase our self -awareness. Heightened self-awareness is a vital ingredient for emotional intelligence, which is also another key life skill.
