Metabolic syndrome is essentially a term to refer to the variety of factors that put you at risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Research has shown that over 25 percent of Americans suffer from metabolic syndrome, putting them at high risk for illness and even death. The primary contributing factor to the onset of metabolic syndrome is your genes and lifestyle choices. Although you cannot change your genetic makeup, you can impact your lifestyle. So, by making a few fundamental lifestyle changes, you can reduce your risk for metabolic syndrome and improve your health overall.

The Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is often “officially” diagnosed by a doctor when an individual meets a few particular criteria. To be diagnosed, they must have at least 3 out of the 5 factors below, which are measured through specific scientific tests:

  1. High triglyceride levels

  2. Decreased HDL (the good kind of cholesterol)

  3. High fasting glucose levels

  4. A waist size of above 40in (for women) or 35in (for men)

  5. High blood pressure

There are also a variety of factors that put someone at a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Some of the most impactful risk factors for metabolic syndrome are obesity, old age, lack of physical activity, insulin resistance, BIPOC, a blood relative with metabolic syndrome, and PCOS. But just because you have one of these risk factors, it does not mean that you will necessarily get metabolic syndrome.

How to Prevent and Treat Metabolic Syndrome

As discussed, there are some ways that you can reduce your risk for developing metabolic syndrome and even treat it or reverse it if you do have it.  So, see below for the top 4 ways to prevent and treat metabolic syndrome with lifestyle factors!

  1. Eat a REAL food diet!

Processed foods and foods high artificial ingredients  are the primary contributing factor to metabolic syndrome. By shifting your diet onto fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats  you can drastically improve your physical health and reduce your risk for metabolic syndrome and the accompanying symptoms.

  1. Get regular exercise!

Regular exercise is the key component to reducing and preventing metabolic syndrome. Through regular exercise, you can lose weight the healthy way and keep your entire body in check. We are designed to MOVE!. An excellent way to start incorporating exercise into your life is by simply taking a walk every morning or evening. If joining a gym is not your speed, you can also try exercising outdoors by bicycling or joining a local recreational sports team.

  1. Avoid smoking and alcohol!

Besides the fact that it causes cancer, smoking can also impact your blood pressure and reduce your cardiovascular health. By quitting smoking, you can prevent these health issues from arising and increase your overall well being.  Consumption of alcohol also causes stress on the body and is a source of added sugar.  An occasional alcoholic beverage may work, but consuming alcohol on the daily can be a major contributor to metabolic syndrome.

  1. Reduce stress!

Too much stress causes additional inflammation in the body.  We can’t avoid all stress, but we can include activities that help us mitigate it daily.  Consider including habits such as arts and crafts, meditation, prayer, listening to music, reading, yoga, massages, time with friends, and even essential oils to help reduce the impact stress has on your day to day life.
