PRODUCTIVITY
SETTING THE STAGE FOR LESS
March 28, 2022
The first blog in this month’s series on Productivity was, “Setting the Stage for More.” This week let’s contemplate the opposite...LESS. There’s important work in prioritizing and sometimes it’s just not possible to do “all the things”.
Step 1: Think about your to-do list and the value of the activities listed. What would it look like to do less? What’s the first thing you’d strike from the list if you were prioritizing only the important stuff? What’s one thing you do routinely that doesn’t bring you joy?
Step 2: Identify the things you should say ‘no’ to. What are you simply going to give yourself permission to stop doing? Pick the low value activities that you can experiment with leaving undone. This also means saying ‘no’ when asked to give your time to something that isn’t a priority; make ‘no’ your default and carefully consider things to say ‘yes’ to. Narrow your list and then work at keeping it slim.
Step 3: Determine what needs to get done that doesn’t require you. What things on the list must get done but others have the skills? Who can help you with the lower priorities? That doesn’t always mean hiring someone else, get comfortable accepting offers of assistance too.
Spend some time eliminating the low-value stuff so you have the time and energy you desire for the things that are important to you and those around you.
GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO DO LESS.
