PTM 2018 Episode 4

David Andersen on How to Make a Piano Sing

Tuning, Voicing and Regulation for Concert Prep

What's in the episode ?

Perform solid tuning, voicing and concert prep before the curtain rises, beyond the level you think you are capable of.

When a good piano is brought to its maximum efficiency via regulation, tuning, and voicing, something magnificent happens; it starts to “sing,” to bloom, to sustain. Players are ecstatic, checks are written, everybody’s happy. You are empowered, and respected by your peers. If a piano technician can master these skills, success in our business is assured.

We’ll be working with a fine grand piano, and David will be showing you some very powerful techniques:

  •  performing very simple, repeatable, and spectacularly successful top-of-the-shoulder and strike point voicing
  •  increasing precision by setting letoff and jack position by sound
  •  making your aftertouch feel like a Tier One piano
  •  “following the fourths” and producing awesome aural tunings
  •  using your body as the ultimate tool
  • …and much, much more...
  • We will have a whole lot of fun, and special and famous guests may appear.

BIOGRAPHY

David Andersen

David Andersen has been a professional musician, recording artist, and piano technician/consultant for nearly four decades. He has overseen the restoration and maintenance of hundreds of Steinway and Mason & Hamlin pianos during that time. Beginning in 1975 he apprenticed for two and a half years under Jack Cofer in Atlanta, Georgia; during the 1980s he studied at Steinway facilities both in New York and London.

After moving to Southern California in 1981, David worked extensively with Sherman Clay, the leading Steinway dealer in most of California, both as a concert preparation technician and as a quality control consultant/piano prep manager for Asian piano companies affiliated with Sherman Clay.

He took on Steve Bellieu as an apprentice in 1991, and the rebuilding/restoration part of the business soon accelerated and expanded. In the ’90’s, David began tuning for film composers and select performance venues and recording studios, still his pleasure and specialty. In late 1999 he began a 6-year association with David Abell Fine Pianos, the landmark Southern California piano store, preparing & maintaining new Fazioli, Bosendorfer, Yamaha, and Schimmel grand pianos.

He opened his own boutique piano sales showroom, the Atelier, in late 2005. He sells quality instruments at all price ranges, rents pianos for performances and recording, and presents intimate concerts and salons with some of the world’s finest pianists.

David continues to teach various aspects of his craft at Piano Technician’s Guild conferences on the local, regional, national and international level. He has held one-day seminars in New York City, Boston, Phoenix, Chicago, Calgary, Baltimore, and Albuquerque, teaching the finer, more subtle aspects of tuning, voicing, regulation, artisanal rebuilding, and diagnostics. His classes always examine how a technician is being as well as what he/she is doing.

Some of the classes David Andersen has taught:

“The Ultimate Tool: using the brilliance of your body in high-end piano work”

“Follow the Fourths, Luke: a radically simple approach to Aural Tuning”

“The Art & Esthetics of Voicing”

 “ Whole-Tone, Open-String Tuning: Advanced Listening Skills”

“Custom, Artist-centered Restoration: the Real Story”

A Stellar reputation in the Piano Industry

David Andersen has a stellar reputation in the piano industry

I purchased my wonderful Bösendorfer from David Andersen for my new studio. I had looked at many pianos before arriving at this excellent choice. David did the voicing and personalization that I was looking for. He also researched and supervised the installation of the midi system that I required. He loves his instruments like they were his children and I am very happy with his baby in my place.

Reviews of this episode

It's the way he integrated several aspects of piano servicing into a goal to get the best out of the musical instrument

David is obviously an incredible Gem of a technician and human being. He is the rare teacher who is a Master of his craft, art & trade.... AND so fluidly and honestly addresses the importance of the intellectual, emotional and spiritual components of the person doing this work. Setting this big picture context brings his teaching to a beautiful level seldom encountered in the teaching context, which tends to mainly focus on the Nuts & Bolts... As fully realized a technician as David is, his highest and most true gifts are those of a teacher and guide.

I enjoyed his relaxed presentation very much. He covered and demonstrated a wide range of topics. There are always new things to learn and he communicated them very clearly.
