First Impressions in Less Than 10 Seconds
On average, we form an impression about another person in less than 10 seconds. Of course, this means that other people form an opinion about us in the same amount of time.
Let's all agree, we can’t form a complete picture or even get a good idea of what the other person is about in such a short amount of time. Instead, it’s a snapshot that’s based on external clues.
That’s why most tips on making a good first impression look and feel very superficial. They are all about your appearance 👀, being on time ⌚, smiling 😊 and good posture 🐏.
Do you know how hard it is to find something that represents posture? I figured pasture would do. 😁
Let’s take a look at some of the different factors that go into making a first impression. The more you know about them, the easier it will be to "control" of as many of them as possible and present yourself in a better light.
Make sure you've dressed appropriately. This will depend on who you’re meeting and the context. You’ll dress differently to meet a blind date at a bar than going for a job interview or a networking meeting.
A good rule of thumb is to dress up a little for the situation and make sure whatever you wear looks good on you and of course that it’s neat and clean. The same goes for personal grooming.
And if you get a chance to choose the place of the first meeting, choose wisely. We not only judge people on their appearance, we are also influenced by the surroundings we first meet them in. While this isn’t often within your control, when it is, take advantage of it. Meet at a nice café, or make sure your office looks neat and organized.
They communicate a lot before you ever open your mouth.
When you meet someone new, don’t hunch over or cross your arms over your abdomen. Instead, practice confident and open postures. Put on a genuine smile and you can’t go wrong.
Just don’t try to fake it. People can usually spot it from a mile away.
Go out there and make a great first impression.
