Purple Co Success Story
BY PURPLE CO
It is with great joy and pride that we can share with you today that we are closing yet another client file.
Our client, a participant of the Lifetime Care and Support scheme, is living with a brain injury following a MVA that occurred in 2017.
At the time of referral to Purple Co, our client couldn’t transport himself too or from work independently and needed to learn how to use public transport. There were significant financial and psychosocial pressures on the young family as a result of the MVA and subsequent time away from paid work.
Despite demonstrated behaviour and a neuropsychological assessment indicating that a return to pre-injury duties may not be possible, our client was persistent. He had been in the same role with the same employer for more than 10 years. The role was physically demanding and required the management of people, processes, tools and equipment.
We developed a comprehensive and fully integrated approach to helping our client resume his independence, including exercise and strengthening, social supports, offering flexible start and finish times to manage the demands of travel; and providing a structured graduated return to work. Graduating both exposure to tasks and working hours. We also note that the place of employment changed physical locations during this period, which added to the demands of helping our client remain at work.
Through the use of a graduated return to work program that integrated the physical, cognitive and psycho social demands of the role, we are thrilled to share that our client has returned to work performing all of his pre-injury tasks on a full time basis without support.
It took us 5 months to upgrade to the pre-injury working hours and tasks, however it was during the past 8 months where we ensured that all of the tools and specific supports had been developed, implemented and embedded by our client and his employer where the success has been achieved.
What is exciting for us is that our client and his employer have acknowledged that they no longer require any support from us. They are confident they know what to do in the first instance should there be any changes or disruptions to work tasks or variations to the way work is performed.
Our client has taken back control of his life following a very serious MVA
- He is fit for his full time role without the need for any ongoing support.
- He is now independent with his own transport.
- He is managing the demands of full-time work and family life.
