I’ve found it to be both a blessing and a curse to have such an ambitious soul. I owe all my success to this trait of mine, but also fully acknowledge that it is the very reason why I've experienced quite a challenging life so far. I often find myself envious of those who seem to "have it easy", but am inspired by those whose ambition has driven them to achieve great things.
For this reason, I was deeply inspired by Sam Heughan's autobiography, "Waypoints: My Scottish Journey," and am grateful that he shared his story with the world though this book.
Some successful celebrities are born into fame (coined "Nepo babies"), and others had opportunities fall into their laps by simply being in the right place at the right time. But Heughan experienced many struggles in his rise to the top and felt like he was failing many times throughout his career (a sentiment that's extremely relatable to most people, including myself).

Not long before being cast for "Outlander" when his career would finally skyrocket to new heights, Heughan shares that there was a time when he had hit "rock bottom" while living the stereotypical life of a "starving artist." He was working as a waiter and bartender to make ends meet, and even applied for social assistance at some point. He shares his disappointment in the numerous attempts he made at being cast in Los Angeles, only to finally return successful, years later. Through perseverance and determination, Heughan kept going, even after others with similar goals had given up. He took great risks, and it paid off. As a reader, it felt good to be reminded that it is possible to reach the top, to achieve our biggest goals, even if we have to take the long and rocky path to get there.
In his book he shares how hiking along the West Highland Way and climbing Ben Nevis (the highest point in the UK) shifted his view on life. His physical journey ended up being an equally challenging inner journey, where he learned about himself and processed his past. I found myself rooting for him, cheering him on along the way, as he described the difficulties along his path. He started the trip by leading with his mind, but finished by leading with his heart.
I love and appreciate the honesty with which he writes throughout the entire book. We as readers are given the opportunity to really understand who Sam Heughan is as a person, instead of only knowing him superficially through the characters he's played. His tone is that of a kind-hearted person who has a lot to offer, and no matter the level of fame he is able to achieve in the future, I'm inclined to believe he will remain grounded and devoted to his audience.
I really enjoy listening to audiobooks, especially when they're read by the author. Hearing their voice delivering their own words has a way of bringing a unique dimension to the experience. In this particular case, it was a real treat. Listening to Sam Heughan read "Waypoints" felt like the best bedtime story ever. I believe Heughan is the kind of storyteller that you could listen endlessly without ever getting bored. If I was the author of children's books, I'd want him to be the one narrating the audiobook versions.

I had been wanting to visit Scotland since watching "Outlander," but reading this book is what sealed the deal for me. I look forward to the day that I am actually able to admire the beautiful views in person, and maybe even hike the West Highland Way myself. (Just a little disclaimer: Outlander is EXTREMELY violent in many ways, and can be triggering for those who have experienced trauma. I, personally, am a hopeless romantic and the love story between Jami and Claire that transcends time and space, got me hooked to say the least!)
If you haven't read or listened to "Waypoints" yet, I highly recommend it.
One of the big lessons in the book is that if you take the time to slow down and appreciate the journey, life becomes much more enjoyable.
In a world where fast-paced is often rewarded, be a rebel and bring your awareness back to the present moment. You might be surprised of what you can discover hidden in plain sight.
