Identity is the way we perceive and express ourselves. Usually we gauge it by factors like heritage, ethnicity, personality, looks and even expressions. But, none of that really gives us a sense of belonging. So many artists still feel empty and lost, left searching to find their way.

There was a movie titled “White Oleander,” about a teenager named Astrid who lived in Los Angeles. Her mother ends up in jail and Astrid ends up going from one foster home to the other. Each home was its own universe, with a new set of rules and lessons. Poor Astrid was left trying to find who she was, and what she wanted while going from one chaotic home to the other. It was a deep journey of self discovery. Through it all she used art to express what she was feeling down deep inside. Life had forced her to grow up very quickly. She ends up becoming a successful artist, putting all of her experiences into her art. With every obstacle she faced, her art was the only thing that kept her going.

Can you think of a time when you lost your identity as you tried to succeed in life? If so, how did it happen? Your identity is one of the most foundational pieces of your life.

It’s never too late to figure out who you are or to change course as you try to win in life. God’s always eager to use his eraser on your past and give you a fresh start. All you have to do is let go and let God. How? Start searching at your core, your soul. Pray for God to come in and give you clarity. Change the way you talk, your words matter.  Declare positive words in your life.

Stop looking to your right and your left, and look up.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11

The truth is we’re made in the image of the Creator God. When we follow His call to create art, books, sculptors and other things we are reflecting His character to the world. When God made humans, he made us creative. We are all creative, we feel the need to pull to create something. He’s the most marvelous artist ever to exist, and we’re the ones who are called to reflect that. It’s a high calling.
