Camp Day 1

Monday July 23, 2018

Today we began Session 2 of Camp Doglando 2018!

Let's welcome our 17 Campers to the July Session!

Day one of Camp Doglando has come to a close. Today started with fast paced ice breakers consisting of skits, chicken tilt, and shoe finding. The ice breakers were not only used to allow each Camper to learn a little bit about each other, but also related back to working with dogs.

Sometimes it’s awkward and frustrating to meet new people get conversations flowing. Similar to how dogs may feel when meeting a group of new people. Afterwards, the Campers got to learn about all the chores they will be doing everyday. Yes, chores! Keeping a clean space is important when working with dogs and kids.

This was followed by a tour through the enrichment side of Doglando. Campers were introduced to how Doglando is run, and also got to take a walk around the yard with all of the enrichment dogs. By doing so they got to understand the daily life of a Doglando dog.

Our outings today included a trip to Petland, the Orange County Animal Shelter, and Pet Alliance. The purpose of these field trips was to have the Campers observe and learn about what a dogs' needs are.

Campers had a follow up discussion about the similarities and differences between a shelter and a pet shop, in terms of quality of living for the dogs.

Lastly, it was time for the Campers to select their dogs. After minutes of interaction between every Camper and every dog, Campers chose their Camp dog. This activity taught them to go beyond picking a dog because it is "cute". It's very important to take into consideration aspects like energy level, personality, and many other characteristics.

Tuesday really starts the hard work! Stay tuned for more about every day at camp.
