Are you caught in the trap?

You are ambitious. You are talented. You have made a positive impact on the world. And yet your struggles with your health and weight leave you feeling frustrated and hopeless. But here’s the thing, you’re far from alone in feeling this way. Much of the stress, distraction, and self-sabotage that prevents people like us from sustaining healthy lifestyle choices comes from the pressures we put on ourselves when we’re constantly comparing ourselves to others in the wrong way.

The Comparison Trap

Did you know that comparing yourself to others is a natural instinct and is especially prevalent among professionals and entrepreneurs? Human brains are hardwired for comparison, and this was the case long before social media sent this operating process of our minds into overdrive. It’s where FOMO comes from. It’s why “Don’t Miss Out!” is so effective as a sales strategy.

In fact, this natural impulse is so strong that there’s no way to turn it off entirely. We are constantly and automatically comparing ourselves to those around us to define who we are and how we fit in. Understanding that and consciously shaping our comparison channels can reduce the negative effects and help us make the most of its advantages.

Defining Your Reality

While we may compare ourselves for a fleeting second with a supermodel or international business mogul, most of the time we’re comparing ourselves with the people we see on a daily basis. Our family, friends, and colleagues influence how we define our success and worth in regard to our professional achievements, wealth, relationships, appearance, and health.

When you compare yourself to others around you who are also feeling tired, overweight, sick, and defeated, you normalize feeling this way and trick yourself into thinking that the way you feel is just “the way it is”.

When you allow your physicians to evaluate your physical and bloodwork as “fine” because it is not awful compared to the others with health and weight issues they’re seeing, you allow yourself to settle for a “good enough” that is much so much less than what you could be living.

However, it is even worse when you feel frustrated about the way you look and feel when you compare yourself with others who seem to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle habits effortlessly. When you do this, you also worry that others in your circle are judging you or doubting your abilities because of your weight… and what appears to be a lack of self-control on your part. This can lead you to feeling like your weight is costing you missed career opportunities, sales, promotions, and other financial rewards.

If weighing your worth next to others has left you feeling hopeless or inferior, it’s time to examine the comparisons you’re making.

Rewriting your story means reevaluating who you are comparing yourself to and for what purpose. It means consciously deciding what your story will be and shaping your thoughts to include comparisons that reinforce a healthy, happy you.

Fostering Healthy Comparisons

Just as you had models when you climbed the career ladder, you need to reorient yourself to the type of comparisons that will help you reach your health goals.

So who should you be comparing yourself with? Because you are GOING to do it… How about the people who have been where you are now and have moved to where you’d like to move next?

Even better, what if the people who you were comparing yourself with were there as support to lift you up, rather than weights to drag you down?

To benefit from comparison, you also need a connection with those who are working through the same struggles. That is why our private member support group is such a key piece of our program. Part of what we do for our clients is facilitate a connection that allows them to develop long-term relationships which foster healthy comparisons.

A Positive Path

The group allows you to connect with others who have absolutely been where you are and give you daily examples to remind you that your goals are attainable.

Those who are two days, one week, or six months ahead of you on the path to better health can all offer different insights and motivation.

Seeing their struggles and ability to push through them will allow you to tackle the same problems with more confidence when you arrive at the same place. Most importantly, it gives you a positive path for your brain’s natural tendency for comparison.

Achieving lasting weight loss and improving your health is about so much more than simply what you eat or don’t eat. It is about transforming the way you think and feel about yourself, and sustaining habits that will transform your life.

I'd love to talk with you about getting started.
