I'm Dan Adams, The Passionate Driving Force Behind Up-skill
My tech journey began in 1988 and led to the creation of New England Network Solutions (NENS) in 1993.
With dedication and a clear vision, NENS grew to become a thriving IT services provider, earning numerous industry awards, and even securing a coveted spot on Inc. magazine’s list of Best Workplaces multiple times.
Interestingly enough, my interactions with hundreds of talented technicians revealed a consistent theme - despite their expertise, many overlooked or simply did not understand the nuances of substantially contributing to a TSP business.
Drawing from my tenure at NENS, working with other MSPs, participation in peergroups, and owners of numerous companies, leadership I recognized that this industry-wide ‘knowledge gap’ was a challenge that needed addressing. This epiphany was the genesis for Up-Skill.

Drawing from my tenure at NENS and other MSPs, I recognized that this industry-wide ‘knowledge gap’ was a challenge that needed addressing. This epiphany was the genesis for Up-Skill.
When I first started trying to figure out what makes small IT companies successful, I thought it was all about being an expert in technology. I wanted to become an expert, the best in the field. But after knowing everything about this area, I quickly realized that being a tech whiz wasn't enough. There had to be something more.
So, I started observing people and how they interacted. I realized that being able to talk to people, understand them, and make them feel valued was just as essential as knowing the technology.
But it wasn't just about shaking hands and smiling; it was about making real connections, like friends do. I worked on this skill, learning to listen more than talk, to ask questions that showed I cared.
Yet, even with this newfound understanding, something still felt missing.
Next, I stumbled upon the idea of professionalism. I learned that looking good and wearing a suit wasn't enough. I had to be someone people could rely on, someone trustworthy and respectful. People had to believe in me and my abilities.
This meant showing up on time, keeping my promises, and treating others the way I would want to be treated. It felt like I was getting closer to the answer, but there was still one piece missing.
Then, I figured out the concept of “Capitalization”.
This wasn't about money but understanding how to use my skills effectively. It was about knowing what actions could help or hurt the business, like a seasoned captain steering a ship through stormy seas.
I needed to learn how to navigate the complex world of business, making wise decisions that would keep me ahead of the competition. This was the final piece of the puzzle.
When I put all these four parts together: Technology Skill, People Skills, Professional Attributes, and Capitalization, I felt like I had cracked the code. It was a beautiful blend of understanding technology, connecting with people, being a true professional, and strategically using my abilities. I felt like a chef who had just discovered the secret recipe for the most delicious dish.
Now, I want to share this discovery with others.
I've seen how these four special things have made my business thrive and my life more fulfilling. I believe that anyone, whether in IT or any other field, can benefit from understanding these four quadrants. It's not just about being good; it's about being great.
If you're ready to scale your IT career and business.
I invite you to join me in honing your skills under these four key quadrants. These aren't just abstract concepts; they're tangible skills that have shaped my own success in the IT world.
We will cover Technology Skill, People Skills, Professional Attributes, and Capitalization in a advanced but approachable way for excellence seekers. It's more than a guide; it's a pathway to success, and I'm eager to share it with you.
