Random Thoughts From The Campfire

JUNE 27/ by The Wanderlust Collective /Art, Inspiration, Lifestyle

I’m in Kentucky camping at the moment and this has given me the time to be able to look back at the struggles I overcame on my path to becoming an artist.

One of the reasons I ask questions for entrance into the Private Facebook Group is to get ideas about the obstacles people are facing. Biggest ones so far have been fear, lack of confidence, finding direction and self sabotage . So what does that look like?

Well, when someone says to me, "I want to create something I can be proud of..." what they're really saying is...”I’m not proud of my work.” You’re never going to get ahead until you wrap yourself around the thing you want to be. It’s the whole identity thing. That’s why the question “Who am I?” is so powerful.

Also, it’s so important to know how much impact the power of the tongue has in our lives. It’s what you repeat all the time that makes a huge difference. You should be saying...”I have the right mindset, I am a great painter!” It’s all about the mindset.

“Watch what you tell yourself, you’re likely to believe it.”

Russ Kyle

Your skills alone aren't going to make you a great painter, your mindset is. So until you get your mindset right, your skills won’t help you. You'll never be able to put your skills to the right use until that point. Mindset is your foundation, your skills will follow. Until you commit yourself to having the right mindset, you won’t be able to reach your goals no matter how good your skills are.

I can spend hours teaching you techniques, but you're never going to be able to apply it until your mindset is correct. That’s why it’s been so important for me to do this project you'll soon have access to...The Artist's Toolbox. I'm literally creating a "mental toolbox" for you to access every time you get stuck, have a struggle or face a roadblock. And...I draw all these tools from the Master Artists we all strive to be!

I was there, it wasn’t easy trying to figure out what path to take.

When I was beginning as an artist, one thing I learned was I needed to get my mind in the right place and that came with experience and determination. I had to put the horse blinders on and look the other way when people told me repeatedly I couldn't succeed.

It was all about perspective and being stubborn helped along the way too. I listened to my internal force that drove me because that was my calling. I believe we are all made with a greater purpose and I thrive on pulling out the creativity I know God placed in us all. I believe all of you are here for a reason. Remember, we all get better and succeed together. We push each other, we even pull each other. Together.
