Nurturing The Nurturers: Prioritising Wellbeing for Coaches with The Coaching Catalysts
July 2023 | BY SARAH BRAMALL | 5 MIN READ
At The Coaching Catalysts, we understand the vital role coaches play in supporting others' growth and development. As we dive deeper into the realm of coaching supervision, we uncover a fundamental aspect often overlooked: the restoration of our own wellbeing. Here, we invite you to explore the importance of self-care in your coaching journey and discover how coaching supervision can become a transformative tool for our overall wellness.
The Restorative Function: Finding the Hidden Gem
Coaching supervision serves a multitude of purposes, and one of its core functions is restoration. It provides a safe and confidential space for coaches to reflect on their own wellbeing, allowing them to recharge their emotional batteries and address any challenges they face. As coaches, we hold sacred space for our clients, absorbing their emotions and navigating intricate dynamics that sometimes mirror our own lives. Without supervision, we may find ourselves carrying the weight of these experiences, longing for a supportive outlet to share and process them.
A Case Study: Illuminating the Power of Supervision
Let's delve into a real-life scenario that highlights the profound impact coaching supervision can have on our wellbeing. During the covid pandemic, I found myself coaching school leaders, a group facing unprecedented challenges. The demands of the situation compelled me to offer an overwhelming number of sessions, often with highly stressed clients. As the workload piled up, I noticed the toll it was taking on my mental health, exacerbating the already heavy burdens of the pandemic.
Recognising the urgency to seek support, I turned to my supervision group. Together, we unraveled the importance of setting boundaries within my practice and seeking additional assistance for my own wellbeing. It was during this period that I experienced the transformative power of Reiki for the first time. This ancient practice enabled me to release the mental pressure I had been carrying, rejuvenating my spirit and restoring my balance.
Questioning Our Wellbeing: A Journey of Reflection
Now an invitation for you, to embark on a journey of introspection. Consider the following questions to gain deeper insight into your own wellbeing:
In which situations have you felt your wellbeing compromised during your coaching practice? Reflect on the moments when you felt emotionally drained, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin. Acknowledging these instances is the first step towards nurturing your own self-care.
What practices do you have in place to support your wellbeing? Take a moment to evaluate your current self-care routines. Are there rituals, habits, or activities that replenish your energy and foster your emotional resilience? Please share your insights and learn from fellow coaches who may offer inspiration for enhancing your wellbeing practices.
As we champion the growth and transformation of others, it is imperative that we prioritise our own wellbeing. Coaching supervision becomes the catalyst that ignites our self-discovery, enabling us to recognize our limits, set healthy boundaries, and seek restoration when needed. Let’s really commit to this collective journey of self-care, fostering a community where coaches thrive and uplift one another. Remember, by nourishing ourselves, we become catalysts for wellbeing not only in our clients but also within our own lives.
