SOIL TESTING – WHAT IT IS, AND WHAT IT DOES FOR YOU.
Soil testing is checking the soil on your property to determine its reactivity and load-bearing capacity to make sure your new structure is safely built. It involves a soil technician visiting your site and taking soil samples usually at diagonal locations which is usually followed by a soil test report documenting the findings from the laboratory tests.
Another fancy word for soil testing is Geotechnical drilling and sampling.
Why is soil testing important for your project?
If you are building a house, it can average weigh about 36,000kg or 36tons, that is one heavy structure bearing down constantly on your land! You will want to test the soil and make sure it can support the weight – even smaller structures like home extensions will still weigh several tons and you want the weight evenly distributed for minimal impact on the building and soil. Slight movements due to structures resting on poor soil can cause cracks and damage to your foundation and walls. The reactivity of the soil- which is how much the soil shrinks and swells, can also determine how fit your soil is for construction and what methods should be employed by your structural engineer.
Our external team of Soil testers help you analyse your soil by taking small soil samples (about the size of a tennis ball in diameter) and testing them. The results help the structural engineer to design a suitable footing or foundation for your structure to suit your soil type.
