Episode 65: Add More Detail
SHOW NOTE
Has your teen ever had the feedback or red-pen comment of 'add more detail'?
I'm sharing what ‘add more detail’ really means (and what it DOESN'T mean)
and what teachers are actually after when they say it.
Plus, I'll give you to magic two-letter word that will help your teen quickly and easily 'add more detail' in their writing, whether it’s an essay, assignment, research inquiry task, speech or even in something more creative like a story or design.
I explain two ways to use that two-letter word and provide examples of how this sounds when it's put into action, so your teen 'triggers' more marks on the scheme and moves up the levels of response.
FEATURED ON THE SHOW:
You’re listening to the Parents of Hardworking Teens Podcast, episode 65 - the magic two-letter word that will help your teen add more detail in their writing. Whether it’s an essay, assignment, research inquiry task, speech or even in something more creative. Plus I’ll explain what ‘add more detail’ really means and what teachers are actually after when they say it.
Hey VIP’s! How are you? I hope you’ve been getting some lovely spring weather right now like I have been this past couple of weeks. It really is the best time of year here in Queensland and I absolutely love it. I love the sunshine and the warmth, and I have a few friends that are like ‘oh my goodness, what is the summer going to be like because it is already getting warm and beautiful, and I’m totally up for it! Bring on the heat! I probably won’t be saying that in the middle of January but right now, bring on the heat! And for me, having that sunshine really makes me want to make the most of it. I think it’s the overhang of growing up in England where you had to make the most of it if there was a sunny day, so I’m trying to be a bit more spontaneous with doing nice things these days. So, this is all going hand-in-hand. I’m such a planner most of the time and I’m so sensible with making sure I get my work done and whatever’s on the to-do list. And I do love that part of me, but I also appreciate how awesome it is to just choose to do something spur of the moment and really make the most of a day or just a morning or evening. And this weather is bringing that out in me at the moment.
I will say, tenuous link here, that spontaneity is also what I love about my monthly Facebook Live Q&A sessions. I love having things just thrown at me in the moment, when it comes to study and teaching and strategy. And I think it’s a real win-win because not only do you get to ask me anything you want to pick my brain on, but honestly, its also nice for me because I get to deliver value without having to do a heap of planning. This is me being very honest.
Because I plan so much for every webinar, workshop and training I deliver. I even plan more than you’d think for these podcast episodes. So, it’s refreshing and fun to just rock up and deliver on the spot to whatever someone throws at me. So, I hope that you are making it along to our FB Live Q&A sessions. I do them once a month, on the third Wednesday of each month and I’m doing that throughout 2023. However, I won’t be doing that in December as I think it falls on something like the 22nd December and I don’t think anyone wants to come and hang out and talk about study, with me, on the 22nd December!
And I just ran the FB Live for August and so this week on the podcast, that is what I’m going to share with you here. I am going to share with you the tips that I shared on that Live about how your teen can ‘add more detail’ in their writing. So whether it’s adding more detail to an analysis in an essay, to an explanation in an assignment, to fleshing out information in a research inquiry task, or in a speech or even in something that’s a little bit more creative. Because, what I find is many students think that ‘add more detail’ means something that it actually doesn’t. So I’m going to share what that phrase ‘add more detail’ or ‘go further with this’ or ‘please expand’, what those really mean and what teachers are actually after when they write it on your teen’s work as feedback or when they say it as advice.
If you’d like to also see the Qs I was asked along with my answers - we had some REALLY good Q’s this month, then you can catch the full replay on the Rock Solid Study Facebook page. And be sure to come live for our future sessions. The third Wednesday of the month.
You can just search Rock Solid Study on Facebook, and I’ll also put a direct link to this Live replay in the show notes for this podcast episode.
So here we go: The two-letter word that’ll help your teen write with more depth and detail.

I hope you found that helpful. You can get the full replay, with my visuals and the Q&A that followed over on the Rock Solid Study Facebook page. And if you know someone who might also find it helpful, you can tag them in the comments there.
