Ink goes way way back! You see it in cave paintings, scrolls and books. It’s been in our history for over 100 millenia. All inks are not the same, each type is pretty different based on geographies, accessibility and how it was used.

Did you know that the first writing in ink was invented in 2500 B.C. by the Egyptians and the Chinese? Ink is a liquid that contains dyes used to color the surface to produce an image, writing, or design.

In the 1700s they took pigment and glue and put it together leaving it to dry until it hardened into a rock like substance that they could easily travel with. It was an inkstick that you could reliquefy when you needed to use it. All they did was scrape some off, add a little water, mix, and voilla instant ink!

Today there is a new ink movement going on and it’s giving other mediums a run for their money. Now you have art institutions embracing ink art, and there are ink masters. Many artists are taking to ink to find their artistic expressions

There are so many types of ink to choose from, including alcohol ink. Working with alcohol inks leads to some pretty cool looking abstracts. It’s highly pigmented, waterproof, transparent and can pretty much be used on any surface.

Now ink specialists are starting to create their own genre’s and fusing traditional with modern techniques.

What will you create using ink?
