STAYING RELEVANT and meeting changing expectations REQUIRES TIME OUT from day-to-day life to THINK THINGS THROUGH with a clear mind …
Sitting on a balcony overlooking a rice paddy field, I start to write. I am here in Bali for the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. I have wanted to come here ever since I heard about the Festival a number of years ago but, like most things that require ring-fencing time and personal space, I put it off. I have been reflecting a lot on this recently — the fact of putting things off — waiting for that magical moment when headspace will appear to think about new ideas and how to make them happen.
The imperative to take stock and create space – for fresh insight and stimulation – needs to be jealously guarded. It is easier said than done, as the responsibilities of work, home and family life build up and the pressures to perform crowd out the desire to bring ideas into the world.
Whether we are entrepreneurs, corporate executives or planning to launch a new venture, staying relevant and meeting changing expectations requires time out from day-to-day life to think things through with a clear mind.
Below are some tips that may help.
Begin with PURPOSE. What are you trying to do and why?
Identify: This requires bundles of curiosity. Ask questions. Learn and unlearn. Look for a new opportunity.
Ignite: Doing something new requires a creative mindset. Spark an idea and create a new solution.
Investigate: Test, prototype and see if your idea is going to work. Think critically, will it work?
Invest: Be courageous and make a decision. Take a small, or big, step.
Implement: Breathing life into an idea and making it happen is what makes it real. Be committed. Partnerships are key, especially if you don’t have the capability to do it on your own.
Improve: This requires a clever mindset, the ability to see where you can make something even better than it is. Learn from your mistakes and celebrate success.
You may not need to go to Bali to find space for fresh thinking but make a commitment to ring fence time to let new ideas and plans bubble to the surface. You may be pleasantly surprised.
