If you identify as being an Emotional Eater, then this is my advice....
Focus on becoming the best version of you......
When we are focussed on the worst version of us, we will continue to come up with all the reasons WHY we are not who we want to be.
Do you hear yourself saying either directly or indirectly through unconscious thoughts and actions, things like....I hate the way I look, my clothes are too tight, I feel tired all the time, I can't be bothered, why can they eat whatever they want and I can't? I feel uncomfortable. I've got no energy. Why can't I look like they do? I need to get rid of these rolls, my jeans are too tight...
Sound familiar?
When we focus on what we DON'T want - we'll always get more of that!
If we are not focussed on the best version of who we CAN be, and who we ARE here to be – we will get stuck, unhappy and uninspired.
The physiology around all this means we are in a constant state of underlying stress, which is the biggest blocker to weight loss!
So here is how to circumnavigate this self-depreciating cycle.
Have a deeper commitment to find out who you want to be –who inspires you, what makes life meaningful for you, how do you want to live your life. What lights you up, makes you smile and feel energized?
Ask yourself this question, "What are you really hungry for?"
When we seek to find out what's missing, and what we need to do to become our best self, to create a more positive emotion – we are beginning to get to the root cause of the problem, and not rush into the band-aid effect, which is to self-sooth or medicate with food.
Ultimately, this does not solve the deeper problems. It can solve smaller problems and make us feel better – but for people who are always battling with negative emotional eating, there is usually a discomfort or anxiety that goes deeper.
Ask yourself these questions:
When we are looking at ways to be our best self, there is less need to seek food to resolve an emotion. By having an awareness of what has caused you to eat in ways that are unhelpful, you are giving yourself the opportunity to create change in areas of life that are causing challenges.
Instead of putting your energy into self-attack and unhelpful eating behaviors, redirect it into finding other ways to sooth your discomfort.
The best way to transform your relationship with food, is to put your energy into making changes to the triggers or the root cause.
