Can narcissism be genetic
12 February 2023
There is some evidence to suggest that narcissism may have a genetic component. Studies have found that personality traits, including those associated with narcissism, are at least partially heritable. In other words, some aspects of an individual's personality are influenced by their genetic makeup.
...genetic factors accounted for approximately 56% of the variability in narcissistic personality traits.
One study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego found that genetic factors accounted for approximately 56% of the variability in narcissistic personality traits. The study also found that environmental factors, such as childhood experiences, played a role in the development of narcissistic traits.
It's worth noting, however, that having a genetic predisposition to narcissism does not necessarily mean that an individual will develop narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). The development of NPD is complex and multifaceted, and can be influenced by a range of factors, including genetics, environment, and psychology.
If you or someone you know is struggling with symptoms of narcissism or a related condition, it's important to seek support from a mental health professional. Treatment may involve therapy, medication, and other interventions, depending on the individual's specific needs and circumstances.
