One of the big issues my clients face is Self-Sabotage. It's one of the most common and most frustrating challenges that comes up when they’re trying to lose weight!
Has this happened to you? You’ve been on this great diet and everything is going well. You’re eating healthy foods, exercising most days, making great choices and following the plan. You’ve been getting great results, have loads more energy and you’re feeling amazing!
Then, out of the blue, something happens – a work or relationship challenge, a health issue or the weather changes and you can't get outside as much. You find that old unhelpful habits are beginning to creep in, like hitting the snooze button more often, going for the “bad” foods as a pick me up & you just can’t be bothered making the effort to plan ahead and meal prep….
You find yourself saying – I’ll start again on Monday…… Ohhh, what the heck, I’ve wrecked it now……may as well go the whole hog and have my cake and eat it too!!!
Hmmm…..and everything begins to spiral down into feelings of disappointment & frustration, which then leads to more unhelpful eating to sooth these emotions….
So what is Self Sabotage? It’s when you go against all of your own rules, sometimes in a deliberate way – and your mind begins to take over with the negative nasty self-talk. Motivation goes out the door and you start doing the opposite of everything that you know is healthy – almost as a form of punishment.
I find the reasons that people's self-sabotage are due to deep and underlying negative emotions, which have resurfaced or have been triggered by an emotional challenge.
It could be due to a lack of self-esteem, self-confidence, self-worth, and/or self-belief. Negative thoughts about self and the ability to lose weight can totally undermine weight-loss efforts.
These negative emotions and messages form the root cause of weight gain and our emotions drive our behaviours.
Emotional eating, binge eating & over eating are a way for our body to self-soothe and it is a natural inbuilt reaction to combat stress & regulate emotions. We are born with this innate behaviour.
In essence, Self-Sabotaging is a culmination of many different negative behaviours when it comes to eating.
So how do you combat Self-Sabotaging behaviours?
By addressing the root cause and taking a deeper, more conscious dive into the reason WHY the negative emotion is there. They are here to teach us and point us to the solution. Weight gain is always the symptom of something else that is going on in life, either from a physiological or psychological perspective. When we address the root cause, and let go of old negative emotions and limiting beliefs, they will no longer re-surface as a result of being triggered.
