Inspiration: Art Nouveau

Art, Art Nouveau, Brussels, Inspiration, Spotlight

I’ve been on an Art Nouveau kick lately. I guess my trip to Brussels, Belgium and the gorgeous Nouveau designed buildings have a lot to do with it. As I’m recording art courses from these amazing journeys, I can’t help but to reminisce about all of the traveling that I was doing.

Art Nouveau started in the late 1800s. It was an ornamental style of art that grew throughout Europe and the U.S. You can recognize the style by the use of lines and floral patterns; and it can be found in a variety of mediums such as architecture, glass, jewelry, furniture and art illustrations.

These artists started a movement on purpose to create a new style. This is when Art Nouveau was coined in Belgium by the L’Art Moderne ( modern art) to describe the work of the art group.

This movement influenced many artists like Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and William Holman Hunt. They take the designs from bugs, wings, flowers, vines, buds etc. So basically using organic lines in their work, taken from nature.  The movement was also inspired by the linear patterns of Japanese prints.

"Art is born of the observation and investigation of nature."

Marcus Tullius Cicero

This wonderful movement was popular but only lasted a short time. It only lasted until about 1910. Evenso, you can still see it’s print in art, architecture, advertising, fashion and so much more in present day. It’s legacy lives on and is affecting artists even as I write this today.

The visit to Brussels ignited using symbolism and natures design in my work, and I enjoy mixing it up and experimenting. If you want to see some Brussels inspiration check it out by clicking the button below!
