Break the overthinking loop for calm decision-making
There’s a fine line between thinking deeply and overthinking.
Thinking deeply about your desired lifestyle. But before you know it, you’re overthinking the perfect morning routine.
Thinking deeply about your business strategy. Overthinking the color scheme of your logo.
Thinking deeply about your audience. Overthinking the next piece of content you put out.
It’s a line that isn’t always so easy to find, and there's no perfect recipe for it.
But today I wanted to share 5 simple strategies I use to calm my overthinking mind & make decisions from a place of clarity and intention – whether I’m overthinking my life, business or relationships.
Let's get to it 👇
5 simple strategies to calm an overthinking mind
1. Schedule ‘Worry Time’
Schedule a regular, dedicated time slot (30min is a good place to start) where you allow yourself to ruminate freely. Let you mind wander into all the 'what-ifs.'
It sounds counter-intuitive to overthink on purpose, but this technique frees up mental space and energy overall. Knowing you have a designated space to (over)think helps put your worries on pause the rest of the time.
2. Ask ‘How/What’ over ‘Why’
Asking ‘Why’ can keep you stuck in a never-ending loop (just imagine a small child) – there is always another 'why' you could ask to get to the definitive answer.
Of course, you want to think deeply about potential root causes, but when you find yourself going around in circles, it's time to change your questions.
Ask a future-focused, action-oriented How or What question:
3. Write to regain control
Separate the facts from the fiction in your mind. Writing down your thoughts can help you see which fears are unfounded and which actions are within your control – this is something you simply can’t do as well in your head, as when you see it written in front of you.
Step 1: Write down every thought that enters your mind, without filtering. This alone will help.
Step 2: Give a little time, then read through and ask yourself:
4. Come back to the present
Version 1: via your mind.
Ask yourself ‘What is wrong right now?’ Often, you’ll notice it’s (just) your thoughts.
Take it a step further by asking ‘What is right right now?’
Version 2: via your body.
Try 4-7-8 Breathing.
Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold at the top for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat 5-10 times.
Both versions are powerful ways to center yourself and make decisions from a place of peace rather than panic.
5. Train your attention
Learn that you can direct your attention. Then practice it. A simple training to do regularly:
Embracing these strategies has not only helped me manage the stress of overthinking, but has also led to more creative business solutions.
The goal isn't to eliminate deep thinking, but to ensure your thinking serves you.
You'll find yourself thinking deeply enough to make meaningful decisions without falling into the trap of overthinking and spinning in circles.
Rooting for you,
Charlotte
