Heroes is a relevant theme in current times, as many have stepped up around the world in the face of the new challenges we’ve faced as a global society. They stepped up to be a frontline worker, or care for a neighbour, or follow the rules even when their patience wore thin and their frustration overwhelmed them.
The literal definition of a hero mentions such things as a legendary figure endowed with great strength or ability, an illustrious warrior, a person admired for achievements and noble qualities, one who shows great courage …
For our purposes, the hero relates to someone who has the courage or strength to make a choice that leads to a positive outcome for their own or others’ wellbeing.

I so admire the work that PEPTALK media is doing to grow ‘Wellbeing Literacy’ nationally. Nadine and her team are committed to helping people understand wellbeing and resilience better so they can help themselves and those they care about. Their resource is jam-packed with tools, all of which are evidence-based but practical enough to use in every day life.

I love PEPTALK for a whole host of reasons, but mostly because it aligns with my kaupapa - ie. it is an integrative approach to improving wellbeing, honing in on what is innately good about humans and fanning the spark that resides in each of us! It’s the best wellbeing publication I’ve come across in New Zealand - or anywhere for that matter.

A note from the editor
Kia ora I’m Nadine, the founder and editor of PEPTALK. My own walk from mental illness to mental wellness taught me many lessons about how (both) powerfully destructive and powerfully constructive the mind can be. Along the way I learned the skills to use my mind in positive ways and help myself be and stay mentally well.
A few years ago as the media began to report regularly about our mental health crisis I was feeling frustrated that there seemed to be a focus on treatment services, with very little resources going towards teaching people the skills to help themselves psychologically thrive. I could see a growing culture of dependency in our society.
Having experienced the rewards of putting wellbeing skills into practice in my own life, and learning about the incredible research in the field of wellbeing science, I felt a strong call to share this empowering knowledge and skills with others. I wanted everyone to know how they too could help themselves to feel good and function well, rise above challenges and thrive. I was determined to present the information in a way that was captivating and inspired people to take it on board.
With a background in magazine publishing, I set about creating the first issue of PEPTALK. It was met with widespread praise and we receive ongoing messages about how our publication is helping people all around New Zealand. These messages continually fuel my fire to increase our readership and help thousands of Kiwis build a healthy, resilient mind.

❝ I have learnt so many little things that are helping me get through day to day and built on tips and tricks that I already had. I recommend PEPTALK to all of my friends and try to get them involved so they can take something from it too. ❞
❝ I came across PEPTALK via Instagram, then I ordered it for myself and became hooked. Then I ordered four more, for my sister and friends. I love the entire ethos, the variety of articles and that ads don’t clog up the pages.❞

❝ You have absolutely smashed it out of the park. This publication is perfect, it covers all aspects of mental health in many ways, making it easy for different people to be able to relate and make connections. The interactive parts of the magazine absolutely top it off, you don’t feel like you are just reading a heap of boring stories, it feels like the whole thing is made especially for you…. it’s awesome to see such amazing content out there for everybody.❞

❝ PEPTALK is such a joy to read and like a breath of fresh air openly talking about big and small mental health issues. It’s written in a way that is easily accessible to anyone that is lucky enough to find it. I will be adding PEPTALK as a resource for my clients, there are so many helpful take home messages and tips to help them have a better understanding of their own mental wellbeing or others they care about.❞
