Camp Day 8

Service Dogs Outing

Today started out just like any other... the Campers each took their dogs for a run in the morning, and practiced loose leash walking. After that, we went back into the barn to work on the "Down" command. All the dogs were able to go into a "down" calmly next to one another. The Campers were even able to move to different dogs and increase distance, duration, and distraction.

Next, we loaded onto the bus to travel to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), where they do service dog training. In that moment, a true test of fate happened... Teena was on her way to Doglando to get on the bus to drive us to CCI, when her gut told her she needed to stop at Starbucks. At Starbucks, she met an old friend who happened to be looking for a dog. After talking a while, the lady went to Doglando to meet Oreo. She fell in love and adopted him right there!

After that we headed to CCI, where we had discussions with Mary, a senior hearing dog trainer. We learned about how the dogs get trained, how they are bred and raised as puppies, and  how they live during their training. We also discussed what happens if they don’t become service dogs.

Following our outing, we had the surprise of going to a succulent farm. This is a favorite field trip for the repeat Campers. We spent 3 hours walking around, and we each bought succulents!

When we arrived back at Doglando we were surprised to have a Meet and Greet family arrive. Yet another moment of fate happened... This family was originally looking at Oreo, but put their application in just after he had been adopted. So they decided to look at China, and the kids fell in love. We ended the day with two adoptions. Only 7 more to go!

Be sure to check out our remaining Camp Dogs, who are looking for a loving home!

See you tomorrow!
