What to Expect in Reception

Lessons are short, interactive and woven into play. Your child will explore:

• Early Literacy – Learning letter sounds (phonics), recognising words, and beginning to write simple sentences.
• Early Maths – Counting, recognising numbers, simple addition and subtraction and patterns.
• Exploration & Creativity – Science, art, music and role-play to develop curiosity and imagination.

Physical development is a key focus, with activities that build fine motor skills (like holding a pencil and using scissors) and gross motor skills (like running, jumping and balancing).

Social and Emotional Growth

Reception helps children build friendships, share, take turns and express emotions in a healthy way. They develop independence, resilience and confidence through structured and free play.

While learning in Reception lays the foundation for Year 1, the priority is making school a fun, safe, and positive experience that nurtures a love for learning.

So, in a nutshell, Reception is a lovely mix of short, structured learning and lots of playtime to help your child grow academically, socially and physically. It’s all about making learning fun, physically active and preparing them gently for what’s to come!
