Business How-To's
02 November 2023
In this article I’m going to share with you just how important a good name is, and how to generate a good one in just 5-10 minutes using ChatGPT. And don’t worry if you’ve not used ChatGPT before, it’s a brilliantly useful AI tool that’s free to use.
The PocketSnap has a great name, an invaluable 3D printed (originally) product idea.
As usual those that sit in the extremes loose out. The truth is that names are important, but you also don’t need to spend forever thinking of one and potentially delaying your product launch in the process. It’s just as important as figuring out where to sell 3D printed items.
To illustrate my point, here are some well known examples of some clever and memorably named products…
Apple iPad:
A play on "i" for "internet" (as with many of Apple's products) and "pad" reminiscent of a notepad. It's simple yet futuristic.
Netflix:
Combines "net" (as in the internet) with "flicks" (a colloquial term for movies). It succinctly conveys the service's primary function.
Amazon Kindle:
The word "kindle" means to ignite or start a fire, metaphorically suggesting the ignition of knowledge or passion for reading.
Tide (laundry detergent):
The name suggests the cleansing power of tides in nature, implying the product's cleaning strength.
And to be clear, brand names aren’t just for big name businesses out there - they’re just as, or even more so important for us smaller businesses selling our 3D prints. All the top selling 3D printed items on etsy (in terms of profit) and that stay in a good selling ranking, tend to have some kind of brand name.
A good name can enhance perceived value (critical), brand recognition, convey the 3D printed product’s benefits and stimulate customer interest and curiosity. This is especially true if you’re selling something that might be seen more as a commodity, like a consumable product or selling 3D printed parts.
Even if your potential customer has no understanding or recollection of your brand name previously, just having it positioned as a name they should / could remember improves perceived value when you sell your 3d printed items.
For example If you take two identical products, maybe some beer coolers, and one is just called “a beer cooler”, but the other has a catchy obvious branded name like CoolerMax or whatever, you’re obviously going to want the CoolerMax.
No one wants another generic beer cooler…
So make sure that when researching how to sell your 3D prints, you increase the perception of value of your products by including a catchy, informative name when you’re strategising your 3D printing business plan.
In this article, I’m going to show you how you can use ChatGPT to get a great name for your 3D printed products. Don’t worry if you’ve not used it before, it’s quick to learn and while this isn’t a complete guide on how to use it, I will give you the prompts I use to generate these results.
In about 5 minutes you can brainstorm, refine and finalise a catchy name that embodies your product’s essence.
Here’s the stuff you need to know…
WHY is a 3D Printed Product Name So Important?
A product name is crucial for several reasons:
Brand Recognition:
It helps your product stand out in a saturated market. A unique name can distinguish your product from competitors.
Communicate Value:
A well-chosen name can communicate your product's core benefits and resonate with your target audience.
Memorability:
Catchy or alliterative names tend to stick in people's minds, making your product more memorable.
Trust:
If a product has a name, it’s less likely to be swapped out from what the customer is expecting. If you’ve ever ordered something generic online, only for it to arrive different from the photos, you’ll know what I mean. Now having a name does not guarantee that won’t happen, but it lowers the risk in the customers mind.
Perceived Value:
Just having a good name vs. not will increase the value of that product in the customers’ mind.
What SHOULD a Product Name Be?
Descriptive:
The name should give an idea about the product's function, usage, or benefits.
Catchy and Memorable:
It should be easy to pronounce and remember. Alliteration or rhymes can help achieve this.
Unique:
It should distinguish your product from others in the market. A quick Google search can help you avoid duplicate names.
What SHOULDN'T a Product Name Be?
Generic or Vague:
Avoid names that are too broad or could apply to multiple products. This can cause confusion and dilute your branding effort
Misleading:
Ensure the name accurately represents your product and doesn't make false claims.
Hard to Pronounce or Spell:
If people can't easily say or write your product name, it will be less likely to stick in their minds.
Don't Delay Launch Over a Perfect Name
Remember, while a product name is important, it's not worth delaying your launch to find the 'perfect' name. There's no such thing as the perfect name, and it's the product's quality and how well it meets consumer needs that truly matters.

Generating Name Ideas with ChatGPT-4
Set the scene:
Start by telling ChatGPT how you want it to work with you. If you want it to act as a naming consultant with years of experience working with big and small name brands - then say so. It will usually curate better, more accurate answers to the prompt if you start off “setting the frame” with it first.
Here’s an example of a prompt to set the frame:
“I’d like you to work as a naming consultant that has years of experience working with top brands, to help me pick a great name for my new [your 3d printed product], please ask me any questions you might need the answers to, to generate the best and most relevant ideas.”
What you could even do is ask ChatGPT to create the best prompt that will help you get the best answer. It might sound silly, but coaxing out of it in stages like this can give you more control and usually get a more comprehensive result in the end.
Get specific:
ChatGPT will now ask you some questions, so you want to drill down on who exactly your product is targeted at. For example, sex, age, interests; the more specific you can get, the more ChatGPT can hone in on the language that will be familiar with them.
You can do this bit quite quickly if you really know your customer, but I’d suggest taking a bit more time over it to get it accurate.
If your product is targeted at middle aged stay at home mums, say so - if it’s engineers in early stages of their careers, say so. The more information about typical likes (interest overlaps) or situations i.e has young kids, the better - but don’t worry too much about demographics ino if you don’t have it.
Prompt ChatGPT-4:
Give ChatGPT-4 context about your product. Describe its features, benefits, target audience, and any other relevant information. For example at a very basic level; "Generate name ideas for a portable, eco-friendly water purifier aimed at outdoor enthusiasts."
Add in more detail as you have it.
Evaluate Suggestions:
Now is starts to get fun. ChatGPT-4 will provide a list of name suggestions. Evaluate these based on your product's features, uniqueness, and the principles outlined above. Play around with these if you want to, ask friends, family - potential customers is best - what they think to them.
Refine Ideas:
If none of the suggestions fit perfectly, refine your prompt with more details or specify the style of name you want. For instance, "Generate catchy, one-word name ideas for a portable, eco-friendly water purifier aimed at outdoor enthusiasts." Or “I like the 1st and 3rd option, but I want it to hint at being slightly less formal and corporate, and communicate the core value of it being easy to use by anyone.
Repeat as Needed:
Continue the process until you find a name you're happy with. Remember, it's a collaborative, iterative process, so don’t expect the first result to be the best one. Over time you will get better at prompting, and don’t be afraid to ask ChatGPT to refer back to a previous post and get super specific if you need to.
Choosing the BEST Name
Once you've got a list of potential names, you can also use ChatGPT-4 to help you decide. Give it your top choices and ask for a comparison, e.g., "Compare the names 'PureFlow', 'EcoQuench', and 'PortaPure' for a portable, eco-friendly water purifier."
Again, the real judges will be your customers. Make sure the name isn’t overly complicated or using language they don’t resonate with.
Tip: often when asking someone if they like the name you’ve chosen, they’ll say yes as not to hurt your feelings. Instead, always give them and A or B choice (or even C) so you can build up a picture of what’s most important.
ChatGPT-4 can provide insights based on the principles above, helping you select the most suitable name for your product. Make sure you do a quick Google check to make sure no one else is using that name already, or certainly not for a product in the same industry as yours, and you’re pretty much good to go (worth being sure of that last step).
Then be sure to mention your name frequently. Be proud about it, have it at the beginning of your title, and several times in your product descriptions. You product is no longer just generic, it’s a real, valuable people of intellectual property that is your creation - so when planning out how to sell 3d prints make sure you’re seeing the product as your own intellectual property, it’s not just a “thing” anymore.
With these steps, ChatGPT-4 becomes a powerful tool for your product-naming journey, aiding in brainstorming, refining, and decision-making processes - just don’t forget to incorporate that human element in there as you go to get something that resonates with those that are the most important; your customers!
