The Power Of The Mind-Body Connection.
“Life is not what it’s supposed to be. It’s what it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.”
Virginia Satir
Oh boy, where do I start! Western medicine has definitely come a long way in the field of mental and physical healthcare, but it’s true that ancient cultures had their own unique approaches to wellness that were just as effective, if not more so!
I mean, think about it – these traditional people had been around for centuries, if not millennia, and they had to figure out how to stay healthy without all the fancy equipment and medicines we have today. And yet, they were still able to thrive and maintain optimum health. Impressive, right?
But let’s not forget about our medical professionals, who are doing their absolute best to help people every day. They work tirelessly to diagnose and treat illness, and I have nothing but respect for them. After all, I was a nurse for 20 years.
It’s just that the system they work within is so focused on treating diseases and problems, instead of promoting health and wellness.
And let’s face it, isn’t it better to focus on staying healthy, instead of waiting for something to go wrong?
I like to think of ancient cultures as the pioneers of preventive healthcare. They didn’t wait for problems to arise, they proactively worked on maintaining their health and balance. That’s the approach we could all benefit from adopting.
They knew that symptoms were just signals that something was a bit off balance in their mind-body-spirit, and they didn’t just treat the symptom, they treated the whole person!
If someone had a tummy ache, they would work on all three levels to get everything feeling right as rain.
Talk about a holistic approach!
The traditional people were all about balance – mind, body, and spirit – and they made sure to live every day in harmony. They didn’t just brush off a bad day as a fluke, but took notice of even the slightest imbalance and addressed it with practices like ho’oponopono.
They also listened to the inner voice of their unconscious mind, trusting that it was always working for their best interests.
Unlike most of us, who only feel on top of the world on good hair days, the Hawaiian traditional people made feeling “pono” a normal part of everyday life.
In the Western world, we sometimes forget to listen to our body’s inner wisdom and instead push it to the limit. We ask it to work extra hours and ignore its attempts to bring up past pain for healing. We even ignore its warning signals and try to numb them with medication.
Ancient Hawaiians knew that life can be a wild ride and they came prepared with rituals and practices to keep their balance during big transitions.
They didn’t wait for the aftermath of life’s events to cause problems before taking action.
Whether it was a new bundle of joy, saying goodbye to a loved one, growing up, or the ultimate adventure, they were ready to stay “PONO” and keep their spirits high.
It’s like having a map, snacks, and a good playlist for a road trip, they are ready for the journey of life!
In contrast, Western culture assumes that we will figure out a way to cope with those things. We tell each other and ourselves to “buck up” and “get over it and on with it.”
This might be a good strategy in some cases, but as author Judith Guest wrote:
“People who keep stiff upper lips find that it’s damn hard to smile.”
It’s all about the mind-body connection. What’s in your head, is in your body. What’s in your body, is in your head. Through relaxation in the massage we not only release muscle tension, but also mental and emotional tensions.
By relaxing our bodies, we relax our minds. By releasing tense muscles we provide healing on many levels, not only physical. In Lomi Lomi we may heal our emotions, memories, beliefs and patterns of behaviour.
This is the theory. The practice… is different for everybody.
Let’s take a page from the ancients and live life like a Hawaiian beach vacation!
We can listen to our bodies and minds like a tropical breeze, and keep our balance like a pro surfer. By doing so, even the biggest life waves won’t throw us off course.
Let’s sail towards total empowerment!
I would love to know what ways you find best for yourself that helps bring you back into balance.

Our training school is based in Toowoomba, Queensland,. However, we will run training throughout South East Queensland and overseas as requested. Please contact us if you would like to know more.
Every teacher has their own unique gift and way of teaching, therefore students are required to start at level 1 in order to avoid the feeling of overwhelm that comes from inexperience as well as the basic body mechanics necessary to avoid injury to themselves or their clients.
If you have completed Heartworks lomi lomi beforehand and can show proof, you may apply for a reduction in price for level 1, however you will still be required to attend.
When Lomi is a path that you are passionate about, no training will be wasted but will all serve the greater understanding of the practice as a whole. Because you have learned from another teacher, it will assist you with a more rapid integration.
After each course is completed, students receive a certificate of completion with the Nationally Approved Provider verification information for continuing education points.
Currently, we are certified with MAA (Massage Association of Australia).
As Australia and New Zealand are deregulated in massage therapy the certificate IV is NOT the minimum certificate to start your massage career or business.
Via our 2.5 days “Heartwork Lomi Lomi Course” you can work legally and professionally.
If some training centres told you the minimum certificate is Cert. IV to start your massage career IT IS 100% WRONG and it is only because of their business and their policy.
To earn the qualifications to have a health provider number, then you will need to study remedial massage, however this course will allow you to work and earn full hourly rate while you are studying, if you choose to.
