Luck not on your side?
Here's how to change that
Have you ever fallen into this trap?👇
You scroll through your LinkedIn or Instagram feed.
You see former classmates and colleagues achieving great things. One just got promoted. Another one is thriving at a startup. Yet another one started their own business.
You think to yourself: “They’re so lucky. If I was as smart/creative/connected… as them, I could also do that.”
There are two reasons this is a trap:
But here’s a thought: What if luck could be created?
Let’s dive into a different perspective today – one full of power and agency 🔥
Not all luck is 'blind' luck
Naval Ravikant – renowned entrepreneur, investor, and author – suggests that not all luck is created equal.
Instead, you can cultivate and harness your luck to create intentional fortune.
There are four types of luck:
1. Blind Luck
This luck falls into your lap. It’s random and completely out of your control – serendipitous but unreliable. Example: Finding a $10 bill on the sidewalk.
2. Luck Through Hard Work & Persistence
The luck that finds you when you’re generating a lot of motion and energy. The more you try, the more opportunities there are to get lucky. Example: A business owner consistently networks and then, ‘luckily’, meets a potential investor.
3. Spotted Luck
Luck through specialised knowledge. If you are highly informed in a certain field, you will notice ‘lucky breaks’ before other people. Example: An entrepreneur’s deep industry knowledge enables them to capitalize on trends before others.
4. Luck from Your Unique Character
By building your unique character, you attract tailored opportunities. You get lucky because no one else has the same unique combination of skills. Example: A creator becomes popular because their unique style resonates with a niche audience. Instead of copying everyone else, they stand out and get ‘lucky’. (See Khaby Lame)
Four steps to increase your luck
1. Stay Informed: Continuously educate yourself. Knowledge equips you to spot and seize opportunities.
👉 Action: Dedicate 20mins daily to learning something new.
2. Create Opportunities: Build relationships, expose yourself to new situations, have a bias to action. Doors open when you knock.
👉 Action: Join a networking group in your field.
3. Be Authentic: As Naval puts it, “Escape competition through authenticity.” No one can beat you at being you. Build your unique character/brand/mindset to attract aligned opportunities (luck).
👉 Action: Share a recent unique insight or project online.
4. Adopt a growth mindset: Rather than having or not having luck, think of luck as something you create. Every experience offers a collection of insights that will bring you closer to your "lucky" break.
👉 Action: Journal your reflections & lessons after wins & setbacks.
Luck isn’t just a mystical force.
At least to some extent, we make our luck.
“Build your character and your reputation so that eventually, you’ll be able to take advantage of opportunities that other people may characterize as luck… but you know it wasn’t.” - Naval
Shift from being a passive recipient of luck to being an active creator of your own fortune.
What’s one stroke of ‘luck’ you’ve experienced that, on reflection, you absolutely had a hand in creating? Hit reply – I’m all ears! 💌
